Well, originally the name was spelt "Lead Zeppelin", but they decided to drop the 'a', incase Americans pronounced it as "Leed". Also, you do realise that the New Yardbirds were a different band? Be it containing Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin.

I think changing their name so Americans wouldn't mispronounce lead--which doesn't even have a spelling difference between British and American English--is probably related more to stupidity on their part.
