Most other RPGs rely on the good ol' attachment of the hero's soul and life-energy to his body, therefore, if there's noone close to take care of them immediately, they're gone for good, as the connection between these two parts quickly weakens.
... still, most RPGs just forget about these simple rules. So let's just say that the emotional shock was so overwhelming, that they simply forgot about that wagon full of phoenix downs they brought along.

Also, Sephiroth has a big sword.
And remember Planescape: Torment?

I think the answer youre looking for in regards to Final Fantasy titles, is one that is sometimes often overlooked. Each Final Fantasy title is unique from the next..whether it be the storyline, characters, magic/battle systems, etc.
Perhaps the abiliites that are well known to revive members in other FF titles are NOT fully available to all characters at all given times. Yes, I know Phoenix Down is available in FFVII, but due to certain circumstances unexplained, it could have been that Sephiroth somehow prohibited Aeris (or others) from gaining access to it withing reasonable time.....(on the other hand,.it could have been just a continuity storyline flaw from a Squaresoft developer...oh geesh,.what could be the remote possibilities of that being the case???)

Sime: I didn't give up, I just got distracted by schoolwork and other games and it got stuck in the queue somewhere. It'll get out eventually, even though I shake my fist at the 2.0 rules. THAC0 indeed. I enjoy the voice acting, particularly the lovable Rob Paulsen as Morte.
