I remember watching countless special features on the new movies and how George Lucas is super anal and has to personally approve everything down to the belt buckle worn by Captain Typho.
How is it that this is allowed to happen, 100% approved?

This is allowed to happen because Disney is a powerfull entity that has more money than George Lucas. Lucas has to know when to bow low, when someone or something has more money.
Or, maybe Lucas ha no idea that this is going on, and being that Disney has Star Wars Weekends every summer, they probably wanted to do something "different."
But it doesn't matter if Lucas knows this is going on or not, in this case, Disney is the Emporer. Lucas is lord of his creation, but Disney can pull the strings however they like because their pockets are deeper... and Lucas knows this, he fears this, and he can't deny it. He must submit to somthing.

That was actually pretty funny. Chewie and the Jawa should have won though, since they were the only ones who really danced.
"I had a lot of different ideas. At one point, Luke, Leia and Ben were all going to be little people, and we did screen tests to see if we could do that." -George Lucas, in STAR WARS: the Annotated Screenplays (p197).
