Heck, if you all had your wish and commerce ignored the holiday, I'm sure you'd walk around town thinking "my, my it doesn't feel like christmas at all".
I like the decorated shops and all the pagentry. It makes it interesting and fun, not some boring holiday that goes by in 1 morning. Rather a build up that lasts a month and a half. We get movies, TV holiday themes, pretty looking stores, carols on the street, etc.. It's all part of the fun.
It's a Western celebration which helps drive sales. It's our holiday. We made it what it is and it's been very successful.
Oh and the holiday does not require the buying of gifts. And if its 'your' holiday - why is it you don't care what the 'Holy Day' is actually about? Or do you and I just missed it?
No problem, just let me know.

Folklore: I don't know the red & green significance, but it's not fair to pick on poor Santa. He wasn't always an advertisement for Coca Cola! And without Santa, there'd be no Krampus!

Many people don't care what the holiday is acutally about, but they still like the idea of family, turkey, tree, presents, and time of work. If they don't want to recognize the birth of Christ then they shouldn't have too. They can still have fun and enjoy the holiday, businessess can get a boost in sales, and some can revel in the birth of Christ.
Western mentality is odd. It's become a fad to bad talk just about everything we have or what we have done. Christmas is not even safe any more. It's an evil holiday bent on greedy corporations stealing our money by selling us useless shit like stocking stuffers and microwave ovens. We become greedy and put on a fake smile and pretend to be happy, but seceretly we are miserable as we move like mindless robots in to a department store and spend money.
Also, considering the fact that the West is moving towards a more secular and neutral stance (on everything), keeping Christimas about Christ and the holiday a holy-day is nearly impossible. But whatever, those that want to celebrate it as a sacred holy time can.

Genesis 9:1-3
Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth. The fear and dread of you will fall upon all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air, upon every creature that moves along the ground, and upon all the fish of the sea; they are given into your hands. Everything that lives and moves will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything."
This is quite post to mention but read this quote before you assume that it doesn't prove my point. The last line of says it all. "Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything" meaning that before humans weren't allowed to eat meat, but God now gave them everything. Which is exactly what I said.
I don't know if someone already brought this up but I can't be arsed to read 3 pages of posts to find out.

Well, Freddy's sweater may have sucked - but he made up for it in character.

Dude, Freddy's sweater kicked ass. To paraphrase the great Malcom Reynolds, or maybe it was Wash. I'm pretty sure it wasn't Simon.
"You see someone walking down the street in a sweater like that, and you know he's got nothing to fear."
Okay, it was something like that. Now I'm gonna have to watch that episode again.
PM me, we'll talk.
