Even way back when, I remember reading articles in which Lucas said that he had a lot of backstory for SW already written.
But while he may have had a vague and general storyline, I doubt it was anything like its current incarnation.
I think he made most of it up as he went along. If he's really had most of the prequels worked out for almost 30 years, he worse at writing than I thought.

Lucas has ALWAYS said crap like this. Anyone who's seen the special features on the TPM DVD knows it's a load of crap because there's a scene of him at Skywalker Ranch in like 1995 where he talks about making the movies and says, "Now, all I need is a story..." And he's just sitting there with a blank look on his face and a pencil.
I think when he had the original ideas for Star Wars he may have also had the idea for Vader who was a fallen Jedi. Just because he had that idea 30+ years ago doesn't mean he had all of ROTS and the PT written.

Lucas is obviously lieing, since he can never admit that he isn't always ahead of the game.
