MINOR ROTS SPOILER:

According to a spoiler I read recently, one of the Seperatists' ships in RotS is called the Invisible Hand. laugh.gif Yes, I know it's completely out of place in the SW universe and screams 'THIS IS A MOVIE!!', yet somehow I can't help loving it - it's so nice to see an in-joke that your average five-year-old won't understand. By Lucas's standards, this is major subtlety...

The sandpeople had women and children. We know this because Anakin killed them how could he tell? The children might be smaller but I never saw a sandperson with breasts. Did they hike their skirts and show him some leg or something?

QUOTE
Also, I can see the point of wanting to kidnap a human and use her as a slave, but they didn't. They tied her to a flimsy easel for a month. It's assumed they had to feed and give her water. What for? Was she purely ornamental? I can understand them wanting the droids, you can sell those for a lot of money, but a chick who's only skills are finding non-existand mushrooms and getting randomly pregnant, you're not going to get much.

The 'invisible hand' is a metaphor for the free market in economic theory. It refers to the idea that the markets will solve any problems in the economy without outside interference. From what I can gather about the Seperatists, not that Lucas ever bothered to explain this properly, they have similarly 'laissez-faire' views on taxation and government regulation...

See what I mean? wink.gif

You're missing the point. The phrase 'invisible hand' is a specific reference to Earth culture, a bit like 'Don't have a cow, man' or 'Read my lips: no new taxes'. And what has German got to do with it?

Very cool. I will now have something to look forward to seeing during this film, albeit a very small happy moment I'm sure.

And you could be a little more polite when requesting amendments to your ignorance. People wont be put down for not knowing something on this site, but you will get hammered for displaying ignorance and feeling that it allows you to behave like a dick in response. If you don't understand an explaination you are welcome to ask for additional clarification, but unfortunately at times there is only so much information that can be supplied in it's simplest forms.

Because, compared to those other things, it's actually reasonably subtle and clever. It's not something that everyone will immediately recognise.

I explained it in my second post. And while it's not impossible that there's some other reasoning behind the name 'Invisible Hand', that would be rather too much of a coincidence. It's not the kind of name you would normally give to a starship, and besides, anyone who knows anything about economics would immediately know what that phrase refers to.

You don't seem to understand that I'm trying to give Lucas credit for at least some intelligence and education here. If 'invisible hand' is a deliberate reference to a well-known phrase, as I assumed, it may be out of place but at least it's a fairly clever in-joke. If it isn't, it's just a really stupid name for a ship...

I don't know about giving him that much credit. I picked up "invisible hand" from watching a couple of news magazines. I don't think it's terribly clever and probably more of Lucas trying to squeeze some of his unclear/wishy-washy political views...

Sorry, i havent sutdied economics in school yet so i have no idea what she was talking about in her first post. I did however obviously see what she was talking about in her second post. But, if you think that little comment was rude enough that it inspired you to write a reply calling me ignorant and dicky, than you my friend are one helluva pussy.

Well, I did say 'reasonably'. wink.gif We're talking relative standards of cleverness here - given Lucas's usual approach I'd have expected him to call it the Down with Taxes! or something like that.

Or "the vast right-wing conspiracy." Or "the axis of evil."

I didn't know about the phrase, so I didn't see it coming. Which would be appropos for something which might feature a cloaking device.

So yeah, I guess some might find the reference amusing. Like E.T.
Or if Obi-wan said "Chill out dude" (which would be slightly less obvious than gundark talk.)
