Hey everybody. I realize that Kaiju movies, as a general rule, suck, but come on. Everyone likes giant monsters. So I was wondering, does anyone actually like the movies for their own sake, or do you simply like the movies because they are generally subliminally awful and fun to laugh at at the same time?
By the way, does anyone other than me like Gamera?
He's a turtle that happens to be giant. He can fly.
Occasionally.

What ever happened to the Kaiju genre? its fun, cause they're giants

I like Ghidora (sp?), sorry. Three headed dragons are pretty cool. Gamera's ok, but... meh.
I normally watch those giant monster movies for a semi-laugh, but at the same time I pay attention to the story. I think its a mixed bag with me, if the movie is HORRIBLE (like Son of Godzilla or whatever the hell that dumb little kid one is) then I laugh at it, but then if its a more structured movie (like Terror Of MechaGodzilla) then it'll have my attention.
Um... yes.

Hey cool. I didn't actually think someone would post a reply on this thread. Thanks.
Kaiju movies shouldn't really exist in the state that they do today, being that Gojira was such a dark alegorical film and everything, but the new Gamera trilogy seems to be taking the genre in the right direction.

Did Japanese people actually like those early kaiju movies, or did they just make them and send them over here to fool English-speaking peoples into thinking that Japan didn't have technology to do decent animations?
Because we all know Japan has technology ten times better than ours, and always did.

Yeah...I don't think Zach ever even watched an episode of Dragon Ball of any of its other, multi-ball iterations. He certainly doesn't own any of the t-shirts.
But Zach, in answer to your question, I think that it wasn't specifically the Japanese people who were trying to trick us...those early kaiju films were for kids, who couldn't really care less what kind of special effects were used. I know this because nearly everyone I know watched the Power Rangers when they were younger and that is basically the same thing as Godzilla or Gamera, what with suitmation and rather pathetic CGI. Its actually a little closer to Ultraman. Yeah. Gamera kicks arse.

MechaGodzilla huh? Yeah he's pretty cool, especially in the two new MechaGodzilla Vs. Godzilla movies they made within the last few years. Yeah.
Has anyone seen the Gamera Trilogy? You know, the new ones. Well, relatively new, whatever. They're cool. Even though Gamera is a turtle and everything.
