Spoilers about Missing:
I mean, having an undead woman with a "Ring-girl" face open your door during the night, peel your covers off your trembling body, and drool blood on you is preeeetty freaky. The people approaching you in the hotel corridor seem too shadowy and creepy, as well as the bloody arm reaching out from the attic door, and the paintings on the walls of the staff-only section. Every single time you open a door, it always shows the door individually, opening up with a creak, and you hope to dear God that it will open fully, because if it doesn't, something will come out from behind it. The bloodshot eye looking at you from the keyhole is very sudden and very freaky as well. Also, the mutilated bodies and rotting corpses up close and in their full gore make you want to throw up.
Anyways, somehow, the XDAS series freaked me out more during nights than Missing did. Strange.

7DAS: Now, THIS was freakier than the first game, for sure. The dreams were pretty obvious, however. However, finding Barry and Serena's bodies, then watching Barry march in to the cell room... Christ, I barely made it to the gun and fired. Barry was RIGHT NEXT TO ME. Of course, there was the corpse room... And then, the prospect of wondering through the ship with limited ammo, with the Welder going around, at first... However, I got the special edition, so that was alright - except it never warned WHERE the Welder would show up. I once came out of Barry's room, the alarm warned me... And then, the Welder came out the SAME DOOR, as I was right beside. Oh, and trying to change back into your clothes after killing the Welder without destroying the idol, to find that you were now the Welder. The game over screen then amused and scared me at the same time. The outtakes kinda made me laugh, though, so that made up for all that crap.
TB: A lot of things. Especially the Defoe basement hallucination.
6DAS: The only REALLY scary thing, was when Janine showed up with the welding mask and knife. And that was BEFORE I realised that she couldn't kill you, though it was still freaky - evil Janine scares me more than Defoe, for some reason. Oh, and whenever Cabbie showed up to kill a Trilby, but I got used to it. Everything else was more 'WTF' than scary.
That's pretty much it from me.

Jumping criminy. I didn't know you could do that. What does that particular screen look like?

Try it yourself. The ending screen basically has a close-up of the welding mask, and Malcom's look behind it is of a 'WTF' nature. But the expression scares mes.

(my first post after over a week of lurking).
I personally have played the series in the slightly wrong order. I have finished 5DAS (big thanks to my bf for introducing me to it) in the middle of the night and rushed to download 7DAS. But as soon as I saw it was taking place in space, I lost heart, never being fond of space games (enough said, completed most of Sierra's old adventures, except the Space Quest series).
Then I kind of forgot about the series (shame on me), until I was introduced to TN (thanks bf again). After that, I got around to 7DAS and 6DAS. Been replaying a few times, and then SEs...
Anyway, sorry for rambling away. The games are simply too good not to ramble about them.
So, scary moments.
During first playing of 5DAS, I think it was everything - the bathroom skeleton, the nightmares, the creaking, doors and footsteps (especially when I knew for a fact there was NO ONE to make those sounds), all chars accounted for one way or another... At later replaying, it was the atmosphere (sounds, music).
In 7DAS - something I haven't read here before. Just after the crew meeting from which Serena is already absent and before you see her ghost (?) for the first time, if you try to save, you are told "Sorry, not now." Now that freaked me out BIG TIME.
As for being chased, I found the Barry chases scarier than the Welder, at least at first playing. At second replay I had the early warnings already, but they served to scare me more, since instead of hoping I might not get attacked in the room, I KNEW for a fact that I would. And the same thing happened to be as described somewhere above - just left the captain's room, got warning, got frozen on the spot and subsequently stabbed in the back.
Also, on second replay found my heart beating like crazy during the 'cross cargo bay quickly, enter airlock, close inner door, change, open outer door' part. Was definitely more scared the second time, because the first time I played, I was touched by the musical score and William's death and got the typical last-surviving-character jaw-squared determination to finish the Welder off.
TN, now... That was scary no matter how many times I replayed it. Mostly because the main feel of it could be summarized with Pratchett's quote: "Welcome to fear [...]. It's hope, turned inside out. You know it can't go wrong, you're sure it can't go wrong... But it might."
The actual getting-killed part with the Tall Man did not scare me much, since in those cases I usually end up dying the first time and then switching in the calculating mode - okay, the guy's coming at me, can't move, can't scream, what CAN I do? (was the same in the Jimmy the Welder scene in 5DAS).
EDIT: The hallucinations were extremely freaky, of course. Especially the basement and becoming the Welder for a few seconds.
In 6DAS, the hallway fluctuating madly while Janine was walking about with the knife was pretty disturbing. As well as the breathing sounds in the manor. But that game scared me less than it did make me feel really pained for Trilby. At first I didn't know about the clones, and had the 'can't die' thought. I was watching Trilby in the cloning room, listening to his reasonable speeches and found my heart completely breaking. And of all the clones I have seen killed, I have felt the most sorry for the one I 'got to know' a little. Then the first and second guards.
Oh, and banging on Janine's door while the Tall Man was advancing at me was pretty scary too, even though it was not a playable sequence. Frankly, I had expected it to become playable at the least fortunate moment and had simply no idea how I was going to get out of this mess. And having the Welder stab you a few times while talking on the phone made me jump.
Oooookay, that was a pretty long first post.

In this same kind of vein is in Trilby's Notes, when you walk into a room, type something, and the parser comes back with "it hurts". Okay, now I'm a little freaked out... (open door) "it hurts" (open the mother loving door!) "it hurts it hurts it hurts it hurts etc." Although, I think that scare was a little more intentional.

I don't think you CAN get chased in a one-door room, as I don't remember being attacked whenever I went into Barry's room.
Speaking of 'it hurts'... I remember re-playing TN, getting up to the part where Trilby is supposed to touch the painting. It happened, and I forgot it was a hallucination, and I thought, "did I do something wrong?" Then I tried again, annoyed, and when it did the third message, I realized. It was more a WTF moment than anything.
Also, I just remembered a 7DAS moment. On the last day, I had gotten into the hangar. I got the Welder alert, so I got moving, getting over to the airlock as the Welder popped up where I had once been, and went after me. I closed the door behind me, put on the space suit, then got over to the outer door. Then, the Welder somehow opened the inner door. Of course, opening the outer door was a doozy, but right before that, the very fact that the bugger had managed to open the bloody door amazed me, regardless of the fact that the bloody git was a Frankenstein-like monstrosity.
Note to self: Take advantage of this if I somehow do a 7DAS plot in my fanfics.

You might think I'm a bit weird...but the first time I played this, I thoguht someone was going to come through the door after I heard their footsteps. After a while, when they hadn't, I thought it was just a sound effect thing...but that the game wasn't sophisticated enough to stop it when nobody was walking around outside. Didn't get that it was intentioanl til someone else pointed it out.
The dream sequences were cool, but by the time you got to 6DAS...I was a bit "ok, weird thing...probably another dream...the kid's not showing it's face, must be something wrong with it...yes, no eyes...cool, he got gets a welding mask face...yep, it was a dream"

5DAS:
I got scared right away at the start. I knew no-one was in the house and entered the upper hallway. DOM! A guy standing there. Well, after that, I was scared to move around as I knew there was SOMEONE in the house. Then I came to TV room. "Hmm... TV + horror = baaaaad things." I was really freaked out there. Well, the skeleton of course... Right after checking the map: "What?! There is secret room right next to kitchen? Oh shit, I have walked near that room many times... What could have happened!" Entering the room was scary of course (if they locked the place up, there was a reason." Music was scary, too. It really scared me when it suddenly started playing. I wasn't scared at the bathroom scene with welder. I was more confused, as I didn't know what to do (took a few tries to figure it out). Generally in 5DAS, I was scared to go upstairs. This could be one of my childhood phobias as the upstairs in our house was pretty dark.
7DAS:
Hand coming out of coffin was reaaally scary. The part where you had to go to the hangar was scary as I thought there would be something scary waiting for the player. Hmm, escaping Barry was scary, of course. Welder was not that terrible as it was old news at that point. Going outside the ship alone had it's own interesting feeling and generally being far away from the safety of other characters. The slaughterhouse in the cabin was shocking, but not really scary.
TN:
All of it.
6DAS:
Tall man coming from the door in the beginning.

Reminds me of how I first got Opera 9 where the "file transfer finished" shows up in a sloooooowly appearing window in the corner of the screen. For some reason, seeing it for the first few times freaked me out big time.
