geez, don't you guys have anime societies that arrange cosplay days? And they reward you with posters and other anime shit for dressing up?
The problem with dressing up as Chzo characters is that most of them are normal . . . only trilby and the supernatural characters are really unusual.

What are you talking about? Everyone in 7 Days is wearing super futuristic shit, with a colored ID badge. Everyone from the flashbacks in Notes are wearing past-y shit. And even the people who are dressed "normal" are easily identifiable. Phillip (from 5DAS) has his brown leather jacket, Chahal (from 7DAS and Notes) has his graying hair and... brown skin, and the doctor lady from 6DAS has her white lab coat. It's all about creativity and attention to detail.

Compare those likely images with what the people at Ohayocon are currently displaying... I trust you'll see the difference.
Edit: Well, maybe not too currently, but currently enough.

Pop quiz, hotshot. Garry Kasparov is coming to kill you, and the only way to change his mind is for you to beat him at chess. What do you do, what do you do?

I think my eyes are bleeding... Fat chicks, nerds, obscure clothing... I think I'm seeing my life spread out in front of me... Help! Before it's too late...
EDIT: Also remind me to hang myself if I ever cosplay. It will be the final straw, unless of course it is in one of those big suits where nobody recognises you. I'll do Chewbacca ok, but that's it! Or possibly a Stormtrooper or gorrilla... But no more after that! I think... I hope...
EDIT again...: This is also why I'm slightly scared of Japan...

It's one of the unwritten rules of Cosplay.
Absolutely no-one, under any circumstances, is allowed to actually bear any real resemblance to their chosen character.
To do so would obviously invoke the wrath of the gods, and bring about a manga fanboy apocalypse.
Smashed up my sanity.
Smashed up my integrity.
Smashed up what I believed in,
Smashed up what's left of me.
Smashed up my everything,
Smashed up all I thought was true,
'gonna smash myself to pieces,
I don't know what else to do.

Yeah, pretty much. That, and it's my birthday. HOLY SHIT ANOTHER SIGN!
It's my birthday too. That was scary when I saw it on the walls. As for christmas, I got no Chzo related gear, but I did get a sweet hat !
