…concerning popularity between the movies.
I don’t know how to put this exactly but I will try and sum it up. The efficiency of the basic troops (Stormtroopers and Battledroids) is closely related to the popularity of the movie, observe: In TESB (and to a lesser extend ANH, TPM and AOFC) the basic troops look badass and from the people I have talked to, it seems TESB is the most popular in ROTS and ROTJ the basic troops just seem clumsy and imbecilic and as such (from the people I know) are the most unpopular.

Hmmm... that's intriguing, except for the fact that, in both AOTC and ROTS, the basic troops were the highly-efficient clone troopers, rendering your hypothesis somewhat moot, I'm afraid.

Don't be. Where their ineptitude helped bring down the Empire sequel, at least the troopers weren't beholden to the personality of some guy named Jango.
Cobnat, you may have something here. But then again, you can compare all of the virtues of the first two movies, with their counterparts, and make the same basic argument: SW and ESB are also the only two movies where we don't see DV's face... SW and ESB are also the only two movies where Obi-wan was cool... SW and ESB are also the only movies where we see Luke's piloting skills set him apart... SW and ESB are also the only films where Han captains the MF... SW and ESB are also the only movies where you're concerned for the characters' fate...

Obi-Wan may be cool in ANH and TESB, but Mace Windu is one sly muthaf*cka any day of the week!
Now, Despondent, let's talk things over: why all the vitriol over the PT? If you watch those clone troopers on Utapau, it's not hard to admit; there's not a lot of clumsiness to pick on.

I was talking about the Battledroids and Stormtroopers only. Just so we don’t misunderstand one another; I am talking about the behaviour of the basic troops.

I see. So there are probably hundreds of factors at work. Which is tragic because it means there is no quick fix to remaking the prequels.

Weren't clone troopers basic troops, though?

Except, perhaps, doing an extensive re-edit on Windows MovieMaker...
