I agree. And both have made you dislike their previous work (even if you liked it before) by releasing the worst crap you can imagine.

Lucas is worse than MJ. If anything Jackson keeps his craziness confined to those unfortunate enough to get involved. Sure MJ dangles his creations before his disappointed audience, but Lucas drops them head first without hesitation. Not that I think Jackson is innocent before proven guilty, but compared artistically? If Lucas owned the Beatles songs the way MJ did (before he pawned them to sony, anyway) just imagine the possibilities! O-bla-di, obi-wan... I want to hold your han...
(I really haven't thought this through.) however, two songs I'd rule out concerning ep3: "don't let me down" and "we can work it out"

If Lucas owned the rights to the Beatles' catalogue we could expect a "Hey Jude" sing-a-long in Episode III.

I can't believe how narrow and superficial you people are.
The way I see it.. releasing crap sequels (errr, in Lucas' case, prequels) merely makes his older stuff look better by comparison. To claim that a crappy set of movies somehow brings down prior, superior movies with it, to me, is just stupid.
I mean, when Richard Adams wrote "Tales From Watership Down" did that make the original Watership Down a bad book? When Nintendo released a sequel to The Legend of Zelda, did the original somehow become a bad game?
"Hurts it by association" is probably the dumbest standard I've ever heard of, and I think it needs to be forgotten along with the Prequel Trilogy.

By renaming good ol' original star wars "a new hope" (which I consider a weak title, personally,) and stamping that STAR WASR logo on every piece of crap he's touched since, (take it back to TPM, the special editions, or Jedi. just be honest with yourself) Lucas HAS brought the standard down. In twenty years, nobody will even realize Han shot first, but WILL wonder "why doesn't R2D2 fly anymore?" So much for superior movies.
who WAS it that championed the fight against colorizing classic films? I can't remember.

Well, I have to disagree. I think when David Fincher decided to make ALIEN 3, the one where Newt and Hicks die offscreen before the movie even starts, he did a disservice to the writers of ALIENS. Not knowing what to do with these characters, the ALIEN 3 writers just offed them out of hand. Sloppy writing like that calls attention to itself.
By comparison, when Lucas gave R2 jet boots and decided to make everyone in the galaxy related to one another and intrinsically tied to Tatooine, he made the whole STAR WARS saga pretty stupid. It's not like these are SEQUELS; he's telling one long, continuous story! So anything done in one chapter does have the effect of hurting the other chapters, in a way not possible with a traditional stand-alone sequel (or prequel), like DIE HARD 2 or TEMPLE OF DOOM.
It's like you're reading a really good book, and you're lovbing every page, and then in the last two chapters it all goes to shit. These last chapters, I argue, have an effect on the book as a whole, including those chapters at the beginning that you thought were so good.
But maybe that's just me. And everyone I know. And all the people here, except maybe Vwing, who doesn't consider the prequels "Star Wars" movies at all. Good for you, Vwing. Good for you.
"I had a lot of different ideas. At one point, Luke, Leia and Ben were all going to be little people, and we did screen tests to see if we could do that." -George Lucas, in STAR WARS: the Annotated Screenplays (p197).

I agree with Civillian. One thing I loved about Starwars is how all the characters and species came together as a whole and told a bigger better story. New Hope on its own would be ok, just an average run of the mill sci-fi. The other 2 OT movies would not be coherent enough to stand on their own. All the movies need to complement eachother. Therefore if you hurt one of the movies, you also hurt the story as a whole. And since 80%(my opinion) of starwars greatness is due to the larger story of all the films combined......The prequels really did fuck it up.
They fucked it up so bad that I do not make the association with them and the OT. Like I said before, the origins of Vader are still a mystery to me.

Even though I think it's total Bullshit, they say that "The Dark Side clouds their vision" or something as a reason they dont know Palpatine is one fo the most powerful Sith Lords of all time.
And btw, I think the biggest reason to hate Ep.II is Anakin's acting. Period.

This is how I am. I simply don't consider the Prequels a real part of the story, any more than I consider the Expanded Universe or a work of fanfiction an actual part of the story (George Lucas, however, DOES count the EU, but then, he's Lucas, his opinion matters not).
When I don't like something, I refuse to admit it's a part of the story unless later installments make it work or redeem it. I refuse to consider Chrono Cross a sequel to Chrono Trigger, I refuse to admit that Neverending Story Part III ever happened, and I refuse to achnowledge the existence of a second season of Yu-Gi-Oh or Codename Kids Next Door. So I'm going to just shlock the Prequel Trilogy in the garbage bin with them.
Then I can go on enjoying the GOOD parts, before everything invariably goes wrong.
