I still say that the slave angle is lame because the stupid bomb was never removed so Watto could take out Vader any time he wants.

QUOTE (Jordan @ Dec 26 2003, 01:01 PM)
I just watched Starwars ep 1 again. And I found an entirely new reason as to why I hate this movie. (yes I do own the DVD)

Episode one depicts Anakin as a poor slave. A young boy on the harsh planet of tattooine under the black hand of slavery.  Shimi Skywalker even goes on about " how this is no life for a young boy". So we are all made to believe that anakin had an unfortunate childhood.

Althougth he was a 'slave' it seemed he had an ok life with a job and a nice boss.

Actually Anakin's life was pretty damn good if you ask me. I would even go as far to say that his life was better then most peoples, hell it was better then mine is right now. He had the free time to build a droid and pod racer. His mother, shimi, seemed rather pleasent and in good health, not to mention the two of them lived in a house which looked no worse than Uncle Owens hole in the ground. Watto was a bit of a hard ass, but again no worse than any other boss. He let Anakin get off work early once too, Anakin was so happy he even proclaimed "yippie". Watto seemed alright, sure he forced the kid into podracing for money but...............anakin loves podracing! So there really is no problem here.
So here we have a Boy who is doing what he loves and what he is good at, a mother who looks healthy and is able to keep an orderly house hold.

Slave? I think not. While Lucas was writing the script he must have forgotten to add the qualities recognized with slavery, instead gave Anakin the life of a normal happy boy.

I agree. Anakin and his mom (who looks nothing like him and vice versa) had it easy. Hell they had job security for crying out loud! No beatings, no whippings, what kind of slavery do you call this? And was anyone bothered by Watto's line "I have a great faith in the boy. He's a credit to your race."?

And what was up with having ten years to rescue her and never getting around to it until you start having visions of her in danger? WTF?!

I like the idea of Anakin as an orphan. He should have been about Luke's age, a reclusive, emotionally repressed drifter, his anger stemming partly from his sense of rootlessness. When his emotions finally boil over, his power with the Force hits out.

The "certain point of view" was an attempt to over philosophize. What Obi-Wan should have said was "If I told you the truth Luke, what would you have done?" or something along those lines.
I am the Fisher King.

I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an obi-wan to go.

Right. He's just like Joseph, son of Jacob. His perky spirit lifts him up.

Ok, a star wars slave. What about droids, are they slaves? I can't believe our heroes would benefit from the use of slaves. They were "force friends," how about that- whatever it means?

Oh- I get it. People who go to work on a regular schedule, are locked into dead-end jobs and then go home and do it all again the next day, those people? they're Slaves. (ha ha. funny george. and the viewers who buy into everything which comes out of Lucasfilm- they're named after Boba Fett's ship. WOW! it really does make sense!)

LOL!!!

It almost seems like Lucas is making some strange statements in his films that are obverse to those themes which are in the original trilogy (which makes me think again about the conspiracy theory that Lucas isn't really the same Lucas 1977-1983....he's been replaced by a government agent)... I digress...

In ANH, Lucas basically speaks of "getting away and living your dreams" and then in TPM, he's basically saying, "you should never have left home, see how much worse things got while you were away---and oh yes, you turn into a big jerk, too."

Are these films actually little personal statements about Lucas himself?

use the force: I was talking about Shmi of course. I wouldn't dream of making sarcastic comments pertaining to your unflinching loyalty to a debunct franchise and comparing it to Anakin's state of servitude.
