I don't think you were following the rhetoric of the election race, to which JM is clearly referring.

Obama does support may accepted Collectivist policies, policies that ultra-Conservatives like to call Socialist and which have been taken for granted in many of the contemporary political systems of the West, eg social security, state-financed health care, and so forth. He was called a socialist by the self-styled "maverick" Sarah Palin, probably to the chagrin of her Presidential candidate, who himself openly supported many ofthe same policies.
