Knights of the Old Republic I know nothing about it

Alot of the time on this forum people refer to the events of KOTOR, sometimes as saga canon, sometimes as Helena's KOTOR fanfic etc.
I've never played the game. I don't have the kind of technology that would allow me to do so. However, everyone goes on about it and I always like to hear a good story and am always open to good ideas.
Could people put in this thread stuff about the story of KOTOR: not reviews, not technical points or stuff like that - the story of it, the characters, the backstory, the events of the game(s)...
Effectively I'd like to hear the story and since I can't play the game this is the best way to do it.
(For any who read this and also read my prequel rewrites, this doesn't mean that the backstory to my prequels will included KOTOR as canon, since I mapped it out months ago and it's too late to change it now)
Cheers.

The basic story is that you create a character and begin the game with him in a ship. Then the ship is attacked and you and some guy named Carth are the only survivors after escaping in an escape pod. Then they reach the world of Taris and start searching for the Jedi who was on board the ship, called Bastila. Bastila, is a very powerful Jedi because of his power called Battle Meditation who affects everyone on a battle.
After finding Bastila, Darth Malak, lord of the Sith, decides to destroy Taris and you other party members escape to Dantooine where the Jedi academy resides. So your character is trained to be a Jedi even he is too old.
The Jedi notice that the Sith's army is limitless, so you and your party search throughout
the galaxy for the map of the Star Forge, a mysterious object that might be the clue for sving the galaxy. But Malak and his apprentice are hunting them...
You really need to play that game. It rocks and has one of the best plot twists ever.

Eeesh... I could try and give you a brief summary of the plot, but it's really no substitute for playing the game yourself. It's so huge, with hundreds of characters and hours of dialogue, that a basic outline really doesn't do it justice. And the plot twist - which, as Sith Avenger says, is utterly brilliant - really doesn't come across so well when you're just reading about it.
I will try if you insist, but it'll take me a while - even with only the basic details, the plot takes a long time to explain fully. Oh, and by the way, Bastila is a girl.

The sandpeople had women and children. We know this because Anakin killed them how could he tell? The children might be smaller but I never saw a sandperson with breasts. Did they hike their skirts and show him some leg or something?

Also, I can see the point of wanting to kidnap a human and use her as a slave, but they didn't. They tied her to a flimsy easel for a month. It's assumed they had to feed and give her water. What for? Was she purely ornamental? I can understand them wanting the droids, you can sell those for a lot of money, but a chick who's only skills are finding non-existand mushrooms and getting randomly pregnant, you're not going to get much.

I'd figured Bastila was a girl from Barend's parodic profiles...
I'd like to play the game, but I can't see me able to have it all to myself long enough to figure out what the heck is going on for about half a year at the least so... yeah.
It's just that with everyone going around using it as canon (not in my opinion - the only pure canon is SW and ESB - curse ROTJ, curse it!) I got the idea that there was a really well-told story in it and I'd like to hear it... thanks for that little starter piece though.

You´re welcome.
But you just need to play it. It's incredible and it will consume 30 hours from your time very easily. (If you do the sidequests it can take to 40 hours to beat it!!)

Yeah, as far as amphibious species, they were the coolest I had seen.
If you havent played the game, it needs to be done. Seriously. Even if you sit down next to somebody and WATCH them play it, its better than nothing. The story is better than anything in the PT.
I wish Lucasfilm would just hand over the rights to Bioware and entrust them with the franchise. It would be soooooooooo much better

In my opinion, it's better than most of the OT as well - particularly RotJ. Given that Lucas himself had absolutely no hand in writing it, that's hardly surprising. It's quite sad that other people can write Star Wars so much better than the original creator.

You said it, mate. For instance, Midichlorians were completely left out of the game, for which I am eternally grateful.
