I just installed Ubuntu on my laptop (dual booting with XP) and was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for additional software I would be interested in for it. You know, things that could come in handy, things to play around with for fun, etc.

I realize this is a fairly broad topic, but I just want to get some stuff to fiddle with a bit.

Also, if anyone could tell me what I need to do to get the new system to interact smoothly with my desktop's shared folders (XP) so I can get to my music, that'd be great too. smile.gif

Bit of a late response to this question, but hell, nobody else replied, so I might as well.

If you want easy access to folders on your XP partition, just use symbolic links.

Let's say you have your My Music folder on your XP partition on hda1 and you want to access it in a folder in your home folder.

Just do:

sudo ln -s "/media/hda1/Documents and Settings/Your User Name/My Music" /home/yourusername/music

That will create a symbolic folder called music in your home directory where you can easily get to your music on Windows.

I already dropped Ubuntu in favour of fc7 on two machines, and DSL on another.

No matter, you can use symbolic links in any distribution of Linux.
