AN oldy but a goody! I was just think about it this morning...

and I have to say this games kicks ass...

any fans here???

************************

i mean, this game had more freedom than any other RPG. You want to wipe out a town, go for it. join all the sindicates, become a boxer, a pornstar, a bounty hunter, a shit shoveler, anything it's great. and the futuramaesque humor is amazing with references to Star Trek, The Hitch Hickers Guide To The Galaxy, Mad Max, Monty Pythons Quest For The Holy Grail, Fallout#1, etc. Just brilliant.

1997s FALLOUT#2 gets my vote for greatest game ever! ! ! ! ! ! !
(at least PC:PRG)
and if a better game comes along, it will still be best game of the 20th century...

Three Words:
"River City Ransom". Or "Metal Gear Solid", for that matter.

Yep Fallout 2 had it all. I still play it. It's that good. Shame about number 3. Have you heard a group called silver style studios is trying to get the rights? Did you see the shots from number 3 before it was canned? Apparently Baulders'gate 3 and Fallout 3 both got the axe from interplay's CEO Herve Caen along with the entire black isle development team. Both were in development and fallout 3 was coming along nicely.

No mutants allowed

Duck and Cover!

Silver style's Hired on 6 of the former BIS'ers and seem to be genuine fans. I hope they get a lease on the license at the very least.

The shots.

NOMA forum topic

The topic explains the pics and the link in green will lead you to them. True fallout faithful will probobly weep, I know I did.

black isle should get together with rockstar!
imagine that, although i really like the turn based combat... the whole action point system is better than the other RPGs out there, 'cause there's no point being a fast character if it means you have to outrun the computer... and then there's Diablo which is just a clickfest!!!

Yep, but it's very thereputic clicking.

I despise turn based combat.

If rockstar teamed up with them, you'd just end up with more bugs, baseball bats, and hookers. Although if they could go beyond being bad for the sake of it, they might be able to pull of something really nice again.

Aargh, this thing won't let me edit my post! I wanted to say I don't like turn based combat unless it's done right (I don't want to have to sit and watch a guy stab my character with a sword with no control over it). But nooooooo, I get some garbled java code or whathaveyou.

turnbased combat's more fair though...

if you put all your character points into Dexterity/Agility, you get more action points, meaning that you are more agile than the average person who attacks you, plus the progression is a little more realistic than something like diablo, where you get a good 10 seconds of attacks on you while you swap weapons when one gets worn out... in actuall combat there's alot of natural movement, that is lost in games when time must be spent waiting for the software to cope with you changing targets... in fallout, you can do surgical strikes like shooting everyone in the eyes so that they're blind and have trouble attacking you, or use cover effectivley, using your action points to move out, shoot, and return to cover (FO covers this well with different colour outlines on targets to illustrate which targets aim is blocked...

Diablo's bullshit appraoch to combat leaves you doing nothing but spending points. combat in games should allow for finess weather it be Fallout's chosen one shooting someone in the groin just hear them call him a cheap bastard, or VCs Tommy Vercetti using a sniper rifle to pop out an old lady's hip to make her hop around untill she dies.

click, click, click in no way resembles combat -unless it's some form of beetle!

Ah, I see your point. I'm not arguing that Diablo is just clicking. I just say it's therputic. If only someone could come up with a real time stat based combat thing... I've said too much!

Also, Daggerfall still rocks my world. Free form medieval RPG. So much fun.

A cool thing to do in Fallout 2 is to just head straight to the end right when you start. After going through a hundred or so hours of sidequests on my first playthrough it was refreshing to beat the game in a matter of only three. cool.gif

Although I loved the game, I found the turn based combat a bit hard to get into at first. Personally, I prefer the Baldur's Gate/NWN system where its turnbased, but played out in real time where you can pause it whenever you want to dish out detailed instructions. Taking that into account, what would have rocked in Fallout 2 is the option to replay a combat scene in real time after it takes place, so you can see your character step out, shoot the enemy in the eyes and then duck into hiding without having to wait between turns.

The only real problem I found in Fallout 2 was that it didn't really distinguish "teams". So, for example, you encounter a group of bandits robbing a merchant caravan. My good alinged character may decide to help the merchants by killing off the bandits, so I open fire. Vic helps out by shooting another bandit, then Sulik runs forward and smashes a mechant's head in with his sledge hammer. Great. Now the merchants that I'm trying to save are attacking me. Thanks a lot. This happend a hell of a lot through the game. Whilst taking on slavers, my henchmen would take out the slaves. Whilst killing crime bosses, my henchmen would open fire on jet addicts. Whilst protecting some farmers brahmin from wolves, I'd soon find that my party kills more of the animals then the damn wolves.

The only fix I could find for this was to set all my henchment to "only attack somebody if they attack me first", but this way they would just stand around watching until I was nearly killed.
