Well, it is a profitable industry.
Or so I assume.

how 'bout a simple game, where you play as a stick figure and must scurry through the halls of middle school in order to obtain a decent grade point average?

Nah, screw that.

A game where you plays as a demon werewolf and tear the living crap out of every person you see!!!

Mwa hahahahah!!!

To be honest, with horror, simplicity is everything.

Look at jaws, it's a classic because it is JUST a shark and a few notes.
The crows, it's a bunch of crows.
The shining, axe man in a hotel
Even Yahtzee's own example of 5 days a stranger is briliant due to how simle it is.

Take something that'll happen every day, say turning off lights, and this will play forth in every day life, even when people stop playing the game.

That's actually quite clever. I never thought of it that way. I mean, even in our subconscious we will think of the game as something from it happens, like waking up on a couch as Trilby did.

I've never been so fucking terrified as the first shift in Trilby's Notes (Before you can control them).

In fact, come to think of it, even with the cola and the tranqs to hand, I'd still get the shit out of the Dark World as quicly as fucking possible, just in case the tall man appeared and attached Trilby to the wall with his stabbin' pole.

That lightswitch idea came from when I was younger. My imagination created a skull like figure in my mind, which would appear whenever I turned the lights off. It then was played with for a while and when I turned them back on it would move closer. Then off closer again, until it was right in my face.

I knew I shouldn't have played doom at 5 years old.

Your childhood fear reminds me of "Blink", that episode in Doctor Who with the stone angels. Proof that lighting effects are always good for cheap scares.

Heh, good one. I had a wierd deja vu to do with lights going out and skulls, except in the reality there was no skulls.

So Spann, what about being trapped in the hotel area? You wouldn't be able to escape and would eventually die, regardless of how scary the Dark World is. Also, you actually have to die anyway.

Yeah, but I didn't know that at the time, did I? It was the first time I'd seen he Tall Man, and he made me cry like a girl.

Fair point. The only problem is when you pop the pills and you hallucinate, which would be scarier then the dark world.

Maybe.

For some reason I wasn't freaked out by Yahtzee's demented creations. Usually i cant even play doom 3 without turning the sound off and having allweapons and godmode on to somehow lower the level of freakiness. Speaking of which, what is the best Horror game you have all played? Me personally its Silent Hill 1. Probably cause i havent played all the others and the school made me shat my pants

Silent Hill 2 and perhaps Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth would come as a close second, but for the whole lot of bugs.

Forbidden Siren 1+2 for me. Being actively hunted down by the immortal undead and your only real weapon against them is the ability to see through their eyes, in doing so get a glimpse of what madness lies within.

Oh, and obviously the 2 Mentioned by David-Kyo. I've been putting off playing Call of Cthulu again because my file got erased and I know how scary some of the stuff I have to do is.
