It went the distance (it's going for speed...) because forum topics have a natural coherency decay of:
g = e(v) - i/2.
That is g (posts before gibberish begins to occur) equals e raised to the v power (the amount of posting viewers) minus half of the amount of people interested in the original topic (i) - because it is much easier for a topic to be de-railed than get pushed back on the tracks. This formula is still in testing and will be adjusted as more time permits experiments. Any help will be welcome, especially from more math oriented people than I.
The probability that it will get back on track is calculated using the same variables. The odds of a topic recovering is roughly something like this.
P® = I(i1) + I(i2)... + I(in)/I(v1) + I(v2)... + I(vn)
The probability of a topic recovering equals the ratio between the total influence of the people concerned with getting the topic back on track compared against the influence of the people being random. Each person's influence (I(i)) is a value between 0 and 1, 0 meaning no influence, 1 meaning instant subservience. The final answer is of course converted into a decimal between 0 and 1, or into a percent from 0-100. A ratio closer to 1 means that it'll be more likely that the topic will recover, and a ratio closer to 0 means that it'll remain a wretched asterisk fight or something like that.
