I really liked the other G.I. Joe movie, which starts with a battle on the Statue of Liberty! You know, I think they might have similar plots... though the one I'm thinking of has them turning people into weird hybrid cobras. Though maybe that was just for fun... I don't know!
The point is that instead of launching a missile, one of the guys picks it up and Throws it at the target! That was awesome. -

QUOTE (civilian_number_two @ Jul 12 2005, 01:14 PM)No way. The only reason Spock came back was because Nimoy wanted him too. It was his conditionj to direct Star Trek III. A great character death cannot be shrugged off; ST III cheapened the best film in he series.
So Star Trek III cheapened Star Trek: First Contact? Whoa! -

I don't think what NASA did was all that irresponsible. I DO tend think they have at least a decent idea of what they're doing. After all, a probe the size of a car doesn't sound that big anyway, and unless someone who has examined the facts comes around to say otherwise, I'd tend to trust them on this one.
Also, I think the argument that we can't place any trust in men (and women!) of science because of some blunders some long dead scientists made a long time ago is starting to run a little thin. Those scientists didn't even bother seriously testing their theories, and in many cases, they just ignored evidence against them!
I suspect the science NASA used to check if sending a big old probe into the comet would fuck up its trajectory signifigantly wasn't all that mind blowing or "bleeding edge." To seriously criticize it, I suspect, might be similar to seriously criticizing our use of a household toaster, because hey, who knows, it might blow up in my face one day, scarring me for life! NASA has been in the space business for some time now, and while they've certainly made some mistakes, even tragic ones, they do strike me as the kind of people who consider the reprecussions of their actions. If they thought there was even a small chance that plummetting a probe into the side of a comet might obliterate all life on earth, I somewhat doubt they would go through with it.
Also, on the issue of cost... NASA has serious reasons for worrying about their budget. They are an expensive agency, and a lot of what they do is for purely theoretical reasons. I personally think that's a really neat and worthy goal, but at the same time I can understand why the nation wouldn't just want to bath them with money. One of the reasons we haven't put a man on Mars (or on the moon anymore, for that matter) is that the cost would be astronomical (lol). -

Now that we all know that hackers don't spend thirteen hours and six bottles of Jolt cola trying to find out how they can get into our forum accounts, let's discuss the real problem here: the danger of hackers flying into our computers on little bike things, like in Tron. No number of squiggles or heiroglyphs can stop them, especially if they use that weird version of tennis where it kills people. Beware the hackers!
Tron was a good movie. -

In all seriousness, CLASS STRUGGLE! YARRR!
Ok, let me try again. Renegade, stop arguing semantics. It's just plain silly and detracting from legitimate debate/bitching.
Well to be fair, you should say Renegade, Rory, and Rhubarb (Hey three R's!), stop arguing semantics. And I think Renegade's point isn't that silly. A lot of people seem to think being a liberal is a horrible thing, but that really seems to be from all the bad press the word gets from people who claim liberals are wishy washy pansies. And THAT's just silly! Well some liberals are pansies I guess, but still!
