First impressions long, long ago...

Firstly, if I want to say something specific like, oh, gosh, I really loved this guy named Laughlyn when he first came here, because he fitted the old band perfectly, I pretty much say it, if not directly, then indirectly.
If I have something against someone, either I say it, if I see someone has potential, or I ignore it.
Sometimes people make blunders out of sheer ignorance about forum rules - and later on they turn out to be ok - do you really want to tell such people your first impression? How nice is that?
On the other hand - I would rather not hear that when I first came here people thought me to be an arrogant wimp, or worse. Surely, it is nice to hear nice things about youself, but are you sure it is always nice things?
All in all, this is not such a great idea of yours.

When I saw this thread this morning my mind did go along similar paths the Madam Corvax's post. I don't think anyone creates the best impression when they first arrive, out of lack of understanding of board politics. People naturally overact elements of their personalities when they first post, partly for an introduction, partly due to the need for a reply.
Stuff like this is more likely to force cards onto the table and cause trouble than it is to massage anyone's ego. I doubt even he BFK could undo the damage from what people might post here.
\ I've not had enough coffee yet for the brain to understand if that's a complement or an insult.

You honestly expect this to work?

You see, this pretty much confirms my point - stuff like JM is suggesting doesn't really work, ego-massaging way or otherwise.
Lauglyn - I gave you as a positive example here of someone who really fitted from the very beginning. That is what I thought of from the very beginning but I really did not think I needed to spell it out. I pretty much know that you know that I really like you. And you see what happens when I tell this directly - you are not sure if I am joking or taking the mickey or being sarcastic, or even insulting.
JM, I did this experiment on a Girl Guide summer camp when I was 12 - one night we told what we thought of each other . The result was a disaster, tears, broken frienship. But if anyone wants to have a go - try it. I'll be sitting back and watching.
Edit - did you really ask each other who'd you like to sleep with most - gee, how could I have missed such fun!. I have to go through it then...

MC: My apologies, I did find it quite odd to be name checked in that way. The typically aquarian trait of 'read, think, analyse, read again, repeat' kicked in, and as always it resulted in an inconclusive answer. Sorry to forced the point, I'll keep mr paranoia on a leash from now on.

Yeah, Rhubs refuses to even contemplating the meanning of the phrase "mince words", let alone go anywhere near it. It took a post or two to get that... Other than that, I've got nothing, and only remember that because it was fairly recent.
I'm always a bit wary of new members, but some have grown on me, and the ones that didn't got the message to bug out, it seems...
I'd be interested to know what people have thought of me. Objective opinions are always interesting to hear.
