I don't care that you hate the city. That's not the interesting part of the story. I also don't care that you figure people who give you a hard time are automatically bitches; sounds like she wasn't altogether sympathetic, and that alone makes her a bit of a write-off. I do hold that regardless of the size of the gap between the door and the elevator, it's a pretty stupid move to drop something down it. What are you doing with keys in your hand while leaping across a whale-sized gap anyhow? You sure can't blame the city for that! But getting back to it, the interesting part of the story was that you got a guy to come in on his own time, and you promised to pay him, and then you ripped him off. Now that you rewrite the story so he wasn't actually doing you a favour at all, I don't know what to believe. Maybe none of it happened in the first place.

OR
The Elevator company, that installed the beast, would've probably gotten a contract for all the servicing of the equipment and would have charged the owners of the building every time they sent a guy on site. So if he did arrive, then the building owners must have payed for his service.
But probably not since it had nothing to do with servicablity of the equipment. The maintenece engineer would know how to enter the bottom shaft without aid of a elevator technician, so if he did come then he definately tossed you a bone.
PS-His company may have paid him for his time, and he then charged his time to administration work or something, so in the end either he was short changed or his company was.
Sorry if that made no sense, just got back from a concert and am sobering up.

Well, it IS possible that the guy who came to help me was actually on his day off, and he came to help me on his own free time, I just don't know. I was only saying that the elevator company was probably supposed to have someone (maybe him, or some coleague of him) on duty at that time, and either he came on his own time or not, I was kinda' being ripped off if you think about it.
I really don't want to change the story or care make myself look better, but the story is really about me having no place to sleep for the night, and no-one giving a damn (or a phone call) about it.
The fact that I only had 15$ worth of money on me, makes me (in your description) unworthy of being helped. You're starting to sound a lot like one of those people in that city I hated so much.

I didn't read it that you were unable to find anyone to help you. The landlady of a building you couldn't even prove you had a right to be in didn't want to help you, and then later she did. I didn't read about anyone else not wanting to help you. The elevator guy came over immediately after the one phone call, the one where you offered him money. I missed the part about how it was actually everyone else'sfault that you dropped your keys down an elevatopr shaft in the first place, but then in the new version there was a gap as wide as the shaft in the Death Star. Good thing you had that cale on your belt.

Fine, take the story anyway you want it. The fact is that where I live, I can get a stranger from the street to help me, and he won't expect money for it. That makes it a nice place for me to live, and makes that city a bad one to.
No she didn't. She agreed to give me the phone number after a long argument. How is that helping in anyway?
You know, I've been lurking on this forum for a while civ, and I really came to respect your points of views on a lot of issues discussed on this forum. This time we seem to be so far appart on this one (opposite sides, really) that either you're yanking my chain, or one of us is misunderstanding a big part of this story.
What exactelly is the problem here? What would you have had me do? More importantly what would you have done ? (and no, not dropping the keys in the first place is not an acceptable answer).

In the end I would acknowledge that I was a bonehead for dropping my keys down an elevator shaft, and I wouldn't wail that the city was no good. While there, I would take in some of the local prostitutes and maybe a show.

Check. Did that.
Check .Diddo.
Ok,so didn't check my wallet. But that really woudn't have helped much unless there was an ATM machine nearby (which is unlikely).
You know what, I did that too. Still hating that city though....
Whit what? I already gave all my money to the elevator guy !!

Listen, I know you want to be the victim here, but you described the repair guy's effort as a favour, for which you offered money. If it was a service he was required to perform, then fine, tell the story another way. But if not, well there's your trouble. You always had the option of getting a hotel room (and yes, if I were in your situation I'd be able to afford that, too) or of sleeping in your car. Shortchanging the guy because you never checked how much money you had while you were actually offering money - well, that's no accident. That's a clear sign of habitual behaviour. You're a cheapskate and you like to throw blame around to other people when you mess up. Stop all that.
