Just found this little discussion... otherwise I would have responded earlier.
One night, I was bored and looking for something on the internet... anything... that raked the Star Wars prequels over the coals. I guess it was because I was sick of hearing so many clueless people heaping praise on these things.
I found your articles and they were fantastic! Absolutely hilarious...
Then I saw the link to your forum and checked it out. I've never joined a forum before, mainly because they're generally unintelligent slagging sessions between clueless idiots... I think you know what I mean.
One person writes: "I think this."
Next person writes: "You're a f%#@ing..... if you think that."
The first person writes back: "Yeah, well you're a ...."
It's pretty stupid and off-putting.
But this forum is really good. People raise interesting points and there's a lot of interesting discussions. And people on the whole are pretty mature in that no-one makes personal attacks on anyone else, despite the occasional debates.
So I joined up and since then, I've got addicted. It's great when I come home tired from work... I'm too tired to do much and my girlfriend's been so busy with university exams recently so I have a lot of weeknights where I'm looking for things to do... and there's only so many times I can watch Lord of the Rings in a certain period of time.
It's good to have intelligent discussions with people who are really interested in films. I like talking about good and bad movies and asking what makes good movies good and what makes bad movies bad...
It's interesting to think about these sorts of things. I actually find it quite useful because I'm working on a piece of fiction at the moment and it's good to think about what works well in a story and what doesn't. These discussions are very good stimulation for the brain.
But at the same time, it's also great fun. I mean, let's face it. Grilling a movie you don't like is so enjoyable. And I must admit that I enjoy stirring up the occasional 'fights' over the merits of some movies.
Good arguments, as long as they always remain civil, are excellent. I never feel angry in the occasional arguments I get into on these forums - because they're interesting and I think the people I argue with are pretty cool guys anyway so it's never personal.
All in all, Chefelf, you've got a great online community going on here. It's good fun and interesting - and great to chat to so many people with similar interests.
I'm a fan.
