I found Doom on the SNES, i believe its pretty much a carbon copy of the PC version (feel free to lampoon me if this is not the case). Anyway, it was '95 or '96 and the invisible Yaks scared the crap out of me...
The origional Half Life had a few jumpy moments, not scary as such, but it did have an unsettling sense of scale at times.

Still can't get it to work. It's not like I'm not making perfect sense here, so can someone please give me some sort of solution. After that you can all complain bitterly about me bumping my own post...

Actually, they put alot of effort into making it scary...everytime you do anything, a monster jumps out at you.

I haven't played the third one yet, but the first two scared the living shit out of me.
I think I've probably mentioned it before somewhere, but Beneath A Steel Sky creeped me out big time toward the end.
Resident Evil 2 did it for me, as well
I can't think of any more for now.
Smashed up my integrity.
Smashed up what I believed in,
Smashed up what's left of me.
Smashed up my everything,
Smashed up all I thought was true,
'gonna smash myself to pieces,
I don't know what else to do.

... indeed. However being 11 years old at the time and having only Fifa '94 and Starfox to compare it too, it was a bit of a fork in the road.
Having said that, Andross from Starfox was pretty wierd...
... looks a little like Cher

For me Beneath A Steel Sky never really creeped me out but it did have the greatest atmosphere of any adventure game I've played. And to top it off the puzzles really made you think without being illogical. In my opinion, the greatest adventure game ever made.

A game that really got to me was the first Blood game... Not so much the initial levels, but there is one (or more levels) that take place in the arctic seas. You have to swim around in that deep, dark water and there are... Things down there. Ack.

Especially the little song by Glados at the end.
