Why does Chris always lose, and Tribly always win? It's not realistic, and kind of bums me out

I'm not looking for something to criticise you, nor am I writing this to draw attention to myself, or to make myself more interesting.
Is it a conscious decision to do this? Is it the nature of your humor?
Personally, I would like to see Trilby display some human characteristics. Let him fall in love, let him be jealous, let him become angry. It wouldn't make it funnier, but that doesn't mean it doesn't have a purpose. Just like it's always funnier to see someone you know fall on their face than with a stranger, it's in my opinion also beneficial to better know the people who are being funny.

Calm down kids.
Yeah, about Chris: I'm fairly sure the only purpose of having him around is for comic relief. If we start to have him as a more human character, we lose what already defines him as a character, and he's already quite a strong character (even if he's only an idiot).

The thing about Chris, the way I've always written him, is that he's not, strictly speaking, an idiot. He's boundlessly energetic, has the attention span of a goldfish and has difficulty taking things seriously, but he's not stupid. I guess some of the things he does can be mistaken for idiocy, but it's more the case that he's trying to get a rise out of Trilby, or just plain bored. He knows perfectly well that he shouldn't run out into a busy road or get in the way of Trilby's plans - he just doesn't CARE. You'll note that he's still alive after a lifetime of applying this attitude to demon slaying, so presumably he can choose to adopt a more sensible attitude when he's in genuine danger.
As I walked through the valley of the shadow of death, I realised that it could do with a lick of paint.

I always thought of it as a rather Black Mage/Fighter dynamic, though Trillby does on occaisions seem to show remorse(just not to Chris).

unpredictably unhinged
Alas, his unpredictability makes him predictable though, because being unpredictability means that he is unlikely to be predicted as predictable, so can thefore can be predicted as being unpredictable.

The scary thing is I understood that.
