R2D2

I want to sit down with George Lucas, and say:
"George, why, if R2D2 has thrusters that can boost him in and out of a starfighter, does the Rebel Alliance need a crane to get him in and out of Luke's X-Wing?"
I want to know what he says. "R2 had grown accustomed to being pampered by the end of A New Hope."

Why couldn't R2 just fly around the Death Star, squirting oil on Stormtroopers and lighting them? Why couldn't R2 get out of the sand on Tattoine after falling off of Jabba's sail barge? Why couldn't R2 get around the Cloud City easier? Blah blah blah. At least have R2's legs get blasted off or something in the PT, to be replaced with jet-less legs.

I was reading the Essential Guide to Characters entry on R2 the other day (don't ask me why) and it actually mentioned his rocket jets. Apparently they were removed sometime between Ep. III and Ep. IV, for reasons that were not explained. I thought it was kind of funny that the authors went out of their way to justify the jets' disappearance.

Don't you know that when IG-88 attacked the Tantive IV that R2 attached his rockets to IG's buttcheeks thus saving his best friend with Alzheimers, C3P0?

All I know is I haven't seen the real prequels yet.

While we're on the topic of Artoo's antics, did anyone else have a problem with that idiotic "duel" he had with the Buzzdroid in the opening scene? The Jedi seem to forget they're in the middle of a huge space battle and start yelling advice and congradulations to Artoo! I'd be willing to bet that they had a cute little award ceremony for him on the ground afterwards, with Palpatine there to pin a medal on him! WTF??

After the storm of protests from this stupid development in AOTC, some official LucasOrgan (probably starwars.com) explained everything. They said that the jets were removed because they only had a 20 year warranty.
That satisfied the morons over at theforce.net.

WTF indeed. Way to go Artoo! (Obi-wan pitches and rolls to pat R2 on the back).
for 3PO, R2 not getting his memory wiped is like Sam watching Frodo float off to the grey havens.
