Topics I've Started

  1. Video Games Live, a laywoman's review.

    Posted 30 Oct 2008

As you all know, I went to Video Games Live last night. This is my review of it.

Ok, we filed into the gorgeous 2 century old Orpheum theater in Downtown Vancouver at around 6:45. There were displays a plenty. A Razer booth that gave away cheep LED blinky necklaces, a "Singstar" competition, a guitar hero contest *I'll get into more detail in a bit, because it is relevant to the whole review..trust me* and drawing for an 80 gig PS3. I would have seen all the booths if I weren't surrounded by the entire virgin population of the city of Vancouver. Oh don't worry, there were non virgins there, since they dragged their absolutely bored out of their skull girlfriends with them. (Or they might have been high priced escorts who knows).

Well there was a bunch of cosplaying nerds there....of course, since there was to be a costume contest at the beginning of the show. Most notably was Chelle and the weighted companion cube, Solid Snake, Fagballs and Dr. Liara T'Soni (who won the competition by the way since she obviously put in an insane amount of effort into her costume) and a Splicer or some wierd nurse from Silent Hill, hard to tell anyway.

As we waited for the show to start they decided to play this little music video: http://www.youtube.c. ..h?v=189QSTKC5no which resulted in much laughter as you watched Sephiroth dance like Napoleon Dynamite complete with Vote for Pedro shirt...

All in all the whole show was astounding. (You could move the cosplaying gits and fat virgin nerds to the back of your mind it was that good) The lighting was incredible, the visuals were absolutely stunning, and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra did not miss a beat with their performance, despite the shenanigans going on around them. (During the Metal Gear Solid bit, a guy came out in a box, and had a "guard" following him around and lit up the little exclaimation point attached to his back, that's an example)

The Set list for last night was:
    - Arcade Medley (Pong to Tetris)
    - Metal Gear Solid
    - God of War
    - Civilization IV
    - Legend of Zelda
    - Metroid
    - Super Mario Bros
    - World of Warcraft tongue.gif
    - Kingdom Hearts
    - Halo
    - One Winged Angel (FF7)
    - Castlevania

And there was this wonderful Pianist (Ms Liu) who was an absolute crazy on the piano. Tickling out A Final Fantasy medley, and then a Super Mario bros medley. She went absolutely crazy during the Super Mario Bros. that woman's fingers could fly....was amazing to watch.

Of course being a Sephiroth Fan girl (dodges tomatoes) my hair stood on end during the Encore when they played One Winged Angel, then Castlevania.

All in all the whole show was absolutely wonderful. I got eyed up by the drooling virgin masses who probably have never seen a real woman in their entire life, other than their mum's, but no one said boo to me. Well I did talk to one charming fellow who mentioned mudkips.

Oh yes about the Guitar Hero contest, see the winner went up on stage to play a song to win a bag full of swag and stuff. Well, it was this 14 year old kid. They wanted him to play "Sweet Emotion" from the Aerosmith game, on hard. He needed to get 175k points to win the swag. Well, he was a cocky little bugger and said "No, I'll play it on EXPERT!!!! " well, the kid only got like 172k or so but because he was cocky and chose expert, he got the swag anyway.

And if you care to see my ugly mug feel free to click here: http://img528.images. ..hpim1832hw8.jpg

So yes, if it's in your neck of the woods eventually I fully encourage you to go see it. YES EVEN YOU YAHTZEE!!!!

  2. ZP followers and Yahtzeephiles...need your wonderful advice.

Ok, on October 29th, my husband and I are going to be attending Video Games Live in Vancouver BC Canada. http://www.videogameslive. com for those who aren't in the know.

Now I was stupid, incredibly STUPID and bought a nice fancy little black dress *a 1940's cocktail dress to be precise* before looking at the "Testimonial" Videos on the videogames live website.

Now I think I'll be horribly horribly overdressed.

Advice: Should I go looking like the slobs I saw in the video, despite it being a full on Symphony Orchestra presentation. (I guess it's supposed to appeal to the unwashed masses of video game nerds who managed to just dust off the Dorito crumbs from their favorite Halo shirt before arriving from the looks of the testimonial video)

    or

Should I dress up in my classy little black dress, do my hair up and if some 300lb greasy Master Chief Cosplaying twat comes up to me and makes a snarky comment, I can just lie and say I'm cosplaying a Rapture survivor and if they would kindly leave me alone (Geek points for using the super control phrase I guess)

Totally lost. Other than showing up naked and telling everyone to suck yours, what would you guys do?
