I found the movie most watchable. It was very tongue-in-cheek and more hammed up than a butcher's display window, and contained many gently mocking references to the radio drama, such as the awesome product placement scene in the first meeting between Lamont and Kahn. I don't like Alec Baldwin very much but I do like Ian McKellen and Tim Curry, so it's all good.
The film failed to capture the true psychotic nature of the Shadow though. There were occasional scenes where he came across as a real nutcase, such as the gangster scene at the beginning. And the line between the Shadow and Lamont was very distinct at all times, which was good. But I didn't get that sense of true zealous black-and-white lunatic sadism. He was still better than he would be if Hollywood were to start work on another Shadow film tomorrow. But the Kahn dude was all JOIN THE DARK SIDE LUKE and Lamont was all "Nuh uh! I'm finished with evil now!" and that was lame. Shadow was totally an antihero, like Batman. I mean... he scared me a lot more than the villains. "You left a vital clue behind, Lefty. And I'm going to find it. And when I find it... I'll find you. You'll burn, Lefty. YOU'RE GOING TO BURN! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"
edit: Billy Zane? Which movie were you referring to?
