What I played: Tales of Symphonia.
What I expected: An action RPG done in a cutesy anime art style that possesed a fun, real-time combat system, a well-written story full of breathtaking plot twists and emotional moments, endearing, lovable characters, and deep, thought provoking dungeon crawls.
What I got: A horribly written script full of ham acting, a plot that would be considered shitty even by Japanese Role-Playing standards, a combat system that consists of you pushing right on the control stick and mashing the A button to gain victory, and terribly simple dungeon design that made me constantly ask myself the question, "Jesus Christ, do these guys think I'm retarded?" Not to mention a selection of party members that might as well be smiley faces painted on 2x4s. They're about that useful in combat, too.
If you get it now, feel free to proceed. It doesn't have to be something you were let down by, either, it could be a SURPRISE PIECE OF AWESOME or just something that was way different than what you expected.
Also, it doesn't have to be this convoluted!
