You're joking, right? Psychological horror is notoriously underused, with many game companies opting for the cat in the closet who jumps out of you since that requires much less thought on their part. Cheap scares become old and tired and, as previously stated, lead you to expect that dead guy on the floor to wake up and come after you.

Manhunt does a good job of providing a few very clever scares. For example, in one of the Mall levels, you have to go down into a darkened basement to turn the electricity on. The clever bit is the guy jumping through the door after you come back upstairs into the 'safe' area. Scared the living shit outta me, i can tell you.

Gahhhhh I hate it when I break my own rules. The cat doesn't jump out OF you, it jumps out AT you.
Caught it before you could call hypocrisy.

Well, I meant that particular element of psychological horror in games. In any case, I'm not really a mainstream gamer.
A cat that jumps out of you? Ok, that was a typo...but that would be a cool addition to a game, the monster jumping out of the main character.
I'll have to remember that if I can ever be arsed to work out how to use AGS in the hope someone might want to play a really rubbish game made by me.
