Chzo coped with the pain in his usual manner; a big carton of ice cream, a marathon of The View, and the soothing screams of a young man who was hanging by his skin which was held firmly to the ceiling by a series of rusty carpenter staples.

(i laffoed)
We actually were considering a Trilby fansite, only my ability with HTML is sad. I have the webspace, but not the ability. And the legion of Trilby Fangirls generally hide out on instant messengers and LJ, in our secret treehouses with our slot machines and hookers, scared and shy like tiny animals. Now that I am here, my best and brightest Revolution will inevitably follow, and thus the stream of others. Then we can start putting up curtains around here and changing your lives. (The LJ link is quite easy to find if you are a sexy sleuth, but the group is closed and you have to take part in a couple of evil rituals to get in. I will open it up with the permission of the others, but it contains nothing more tragically exciting than discussions like "Do you think Sam cloned his clothing as well?")
... and I'm a girl too before you start WRITING LIK THIS OMG SQUEEE GLOMP GAYANIMESAYINGS KAWAIII!
OMG SQUEE KAWAII!!!! Okay, done. Hooray! A girl! I hug you with the secret feminine bonds of sistership with the secret feminine handshake! I love finding more ladies who are fans. Also, the jury is out on both of your considerations regarding brain and humour.
This happened at the beginning of Trilby's Notes, didn't it? In which case, if he waits, things other than the freckles will fall off. No, Trilby, no.
Anyway, thank you all for the welcome. I feel the warmth of your love mixed with a little fascinated repulsion, and I like you all greatly. I hope that my sisters-in-arms also come here, so that we can act much in the manner of a hive of bees.

Dear Diary,
learned another word today, going to sleep now, before voices in head take over again.
Love,

My left eyebrow and the corners of my mouth are rocketing in opposite directions.
I'm going to have to request that this LJ thing be posted for scrutiny before I drop the terror level to orange.

I don't know if you'd be comforted. I think we succumbed to feminine frivolity somewhere down the line and asked the age-old question of boxers or briefs, whereupon it was decided that who cares, it's only nudity if he takes off the hat.

But if they wrote:
A. Self-insertion fan fiction
B. Erotic fan fiction
or C. Anything in which Trilby falls in love with someone
I would break their face.

The last fanfic I read was one for 'Dirty Pair', around 1993 or so. That was about enough for me.

I think it's a case of "where do you draw the line anyway?". I mean, it's probably already offensive to have somebody writing your characters being ridiculously OOC, it's only a tiny couple of steps further to have your character being ridiculously OOC and having even more ridiculously OOC sex with another character.
Some creators are incredibly gracious about this stuff; Pratchett, for instance, and Gaiman. A lot of online creators can also be incredibly gracious in the face of panic. Tracy Butler of the incredible Lackadaisy has to contend with about fifteen million furries and their original characters, and she wipes their dribble up with a kind word for all. Chris Onstad of Achewood is also really gracious towards his fandom.
I think a good piece of advice is "divorce yourselves from your fandom", unless you have a really refined sense of schadenfreude.
