GREAT NEWS! In fact, it's so great, I HAVE TO SHOUT ABOUT IT!
Heh, okay, now that you're all deaf, here's some good news about the coming availibility of the *original* Original Trilogy on DVD.
http://www.starwars....ws20060503.html
In response to overwhelming demand, Lucasfilm Ltd. and Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will release attractively priced individual two-disc releases of Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Each release includes the 2004 digitally remastered version of the movie and, as bonus material, the theatrical edition of the film. That means you'll be able to enjoy Star Wars as it first appeared in 1977, Empire in 1980, and Jedi in 1983.
Isn't that great? Lucas has seen reason! I guess now I'll forgive him for the Prequel Trilogy.
I'm glad to see he hasn't forgotten about his fans, because this has shown that they can and do make a difference!
(Apologies, Chef, if this should be in a different place or if this link has been posted up before. Please feel free to move or delete, as you wish.)

If someone already has the OOT on a fan-made DVD, laserdisc, or VHS, and they *don't* want to get the official DVD release, that's no skin off my nose. I just think it's great news, that's all, and I think it also shows a side of Lucas that many of us thought was either dead and gone or just deeply buried.
Apparently he listens to his fans after all.

I think he listens to his wallet more.
Maybe, but even if the hard-core OOT fans never bought another Lucasfilm product, I sincerely doubt it would hurt his pocketbook. He really has no need for the money the OOT release will bring.
Until and unless Lucas says otherwise (e.i., he did it all for the money), I prefer to believe that he changed his mind for another, better reason. Maybe some wise person told him he didn't need to feel ashamed of the OOT anymore.

lucas said that he's releaseing this as a test...
if it sells really well, then he'll do a proper OOT release.
but he put the 2004 editions in and made the originals the 1993 laserdisc version in stereo (even thought the original print is in surround), and the original film would habve had to be digitally remastered BEFORE CGI could be added... so it's an intentionally poor version to disuade its purchase....
so he can later say" oh... i guess you didn't want the originals so badly then."
he's being a jerk and you all know it.
