Well, limited edition replication pies sell better on eBay if they're completly unused. This is why I just have a bog standard unlimited Tasty Meat pie, and an army of Mini-Pie-Mes...

Rather then following a trend, I think it would be more an example of what Mist was talking about awhile ago. I tried to find the posts, but I can't remember which thread it was it, but it was the idea of hearing something, forgetting it and then thinking of it later and believing it was your own idea. Sorry.
