The "funny" thing is that Lucas jumped on the Laserdisc bandwagon IMMEDIATELY! I remember seeing the trilogy on laserdisc in the early nineties ('90 - '91). He wasted no time getting that trilogy out on a soon to be obsolete format yet STILL makes us wait for DVD.

Ahhh, it's all coming back to me now. I remember in 99 about the time phantom menace came out there was a tv interview with GL and he was going on about how there wouldn't be movies 7-9, and that his final gift to the world (or something like that) would be a box set of the 6 films around Christmas of 2005. So the "special editions" were just a warmup. In fact, Empire's SE box office went so well I seem to recall that JEDI was held off for a week or so.
plus the taco bell toys. I had a friend in TB corporate, so I was able to get all seven (including the yanked from release "exploding" death star) TB star wars toys. then with PM, there were like 70 or so (kfc, PH, TB), and I didn't even try. (oh no! memories of all those pepsi cans!) Also! this friend was handing out tshirts that night (black with vader in purple, still unworn) like the taco bell workers wore so it added to the "rock concert" affect of the movie night. we went to all the SE's like that, so I suppose are partly responsible for the boffo BO that said "Go ahead George! tweak it some more! they'll be back. And besides, You owe it to them. and to yourself!"
