I don't remember THAT from the book. It seemed kind of ridiculous on screen since the strategic placing of various objects to hide the dude's crotch gave it a comic effect easily found in films such a Austin Powers.
BEOWULF Awesome or REALLY Awesome?

I do what I can.
"Maybe artists shouldn't talk about their art."
"Well kids, I guess your father isn't a hermaphrodite."
"Izzy! enough with the rabid smootching!!"

I would like to say this film had all the basic features of a bad book adaptations as well as all the plots holes and iffy lines of a regular bad movie.
I can sum it up thusly:
I saw it in IMAX 3D. Angelina Jolie (with attractively softened cheeks [on her face]) was naked, with all three dimensions, and it was still a wholly unpleasant experience.
If necessary, I could give a point-by-point description of how this movie sucked independently of the book, but I won't right now.
It's still kind of painful to think about.

This is why people should just listen to me.

I listen to you, Hecc, but I had to see it.
It was, after all, my favorite book.
And it was interesting to see a whole movie in the excellent polarized light 3D. Haven't done that since Polar Express.
And my dad wanted to see it.
And I hadn't seen a movie since At World's End, I think, so I enjoyed the chance to get out and see a movie.
And...
Well, I'm an incurable optimist.

Speaking of game over, I was more than mildly amused to note that the theme for Grendel's mother sounded disturbingly like the Serenade of Water from Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Considering in the movie Grendel's mum is a water demon this made me laugh through nearly every scene with her in it because it ruined what atmosphere the movie had and turned it into a colossal joke; that being the movie being one tailor-made for fat fantasy-addicted nerds with no hope of getting sex in real life.
I mean come on people, think about it. Great castles, dark forests, ungodly monsters, kings and swords, epic battles - and then video game references and Angelina Jolie with no clothes on.
This point was further reinforced by the huge blob of a man in a SNAPE KILLS DUMBLEDORE T-shirt up the front.

Did you really have anything to add there?
Meh ... I'm not mad ... just disappointed. If you want to resurrect a thread, at least have something to say.

I'm sorry I didn't realize it was that important. Truth is I have spent the last year (or however long it has been) trying to forget this movie, so I don't really remember an overwhelming amount of detail just that I really, REALLY hated it.
I think it was the point when the guy was ripped in half and had his blood poured out of his body that I decided this movie was just going to be an ugly gore-fest and I kind of really lost interest.
I personally didn't think the effects were that great, and to be quite honest I didn't like the story a whole lot. Of course if I am honest I have to admit I haven't read the book so I don't know how accurate the movie was in relation. As popular as the book was though, and with how much this movie was hyped I was expecting much better. I just thought it focused too much on "Gore/Blood/Decapitation/Violence/Insert similar ugly visual" and not enough on everything else. In short if I am honest the movie was just plain too gory/graphic for me.

I personally don't understand why people keep wanting to revisit Beowulf. There isn't much story there. People will lament the liberties taken by contemporary writers, but without any liberties taken it's just a guy fighting various monsters in succession. I have played video games with more storyline. Puzzle games even.
