I just watched the TV spots for ROTS. I take it as a bad sign that certain parts made me cringe.
Lines like "Anakin, you're breaking my heart!" made me wince. People just don't talk that way. The beautiful thing about the OT is that the characters acted and spoke in a way we could relate to, even though they were doing amazing things in a world we didn't live in, etc. But lines like "you're breaking my heart" just sound so forced and phony, because no one expresses their pain in such a cliched way, outside of a soap opera or a movie from 1955.
It reminded me of brilliant lines like "I've been dying a little bit each day since you came back into my life." You know, very forced, very phony sounding lines that immediately take you out of the moment because they just don't sound geniune at all.
It's like Lucas read a book about love and the applied what he learned to his script.
Makes me wonder if he's ever actually been in love.
With someone besides himself I mean.
Thoughts?

Yeah, I can't get past those lines of dialogue either. I've been secretly hoping this movie would dissuade my fears, but I'm beginning to fear for the worst...again.

the OT didn't have the best dialogue... but it was passable...
this new stuff has been nothing but awful...

Yeah, nice to see you back, Esco. Check out the LOTR stuff by Barend in Screening Room... there is some interesting stuff there...
As to OT dialogue. Here is a jewel I discovered re-watching ESB
"Don't get all mushy on me, so long, Princess"
I mean, really. mushy? WTF is mushy? And the juxtaposition of "mushy" and "princess" is just hilarious.
But it in nowhere near as bad as "I don't like sand" et al

Ah, but this is from the clumsiest scene in ESB. All of a sudden, without any setup whatever, we learn that Han thinks that Leia is in love with him. It's their first scene together and Han's talking about "the way you feel about me." Huh? You can't even argue that Star Wars sets this up because it doesn't; all of the affectionate moments at the end of that movie are between Leia and Luke.

Well, I consider that it is just the dialogue that is clumsy. I knew that she was in love with him from the first moment I saw her on screen watching him. I just knew. But the dialogue is horrible, he should have just walked away feeling offended that she was NOT more affectionate. The whole thing went like
"I guess this is it Princess"
"I guess it is"
SO clearly, he's given her an opening - Look, I am leaving, what are you going to do now, will you just let me go like that or will I get at least one warm word from you like "please don't go".
But she is vary of him so she just says what he does and it means "You know and I know that you are sorry that you have to go because you have feelings for me, but I just don't want to be the first who admits it".
A classic. No more than ten words and I know it all. It is just the last line of Han that felt like sand between my teeth.

You've got a good point there, actually. Although I think The Empire Strikes Back is a great movie, I am increasingly aware that there are continuity problems in it. Ah, well. 'tis a small price to pay.
