In a stunning display of Creative Commons licensing, 8bitpeoples has endeavored to bring us all the pseudo-retro-video game music one could hope for. A lot of the songs from this project feel like they've been ripped from a Gameboy. The quality varies, but hey, it's free. And free is good, right?

The one I wanted to mention is the "guest" I, Cactus. This collection of songs isn't as inspired by obsolete sound cards as the others, and altogether it really does pack some powerful emotions, for me at least. Seriously, the first song even sounds like a sunrise. Just thought I'd share that.

Anyway, are these original songs, or remixes of game music?

They're original. If you want your Legend of Zelda soundtrack, you'll have to go elsewhere. But I'm not too well-versed in Gameboy lore so I probably wouldn't pick up a reference to an old game if I heard one.
