  1. In Topic: The Star Wars Holiday Special

    Posted 20 Aug 2005

I can't believe you guys can't see the comedy in this thing. I saw it when I was a kid, but really hardly remembered it. I recently got a copy off of eBay, and man... I haven't laughed so hard in years.

Here's just a few things that made me guffaw:

** The "Donna Reed" opening with Chewie's lipstick Wookie wife

** His dad "Itchy" watching virtual porn of a 70s ballroom singer supplied by Ed Norton from "The Honeymooners"

** Chewie's little brat celebrating the arrival of a TRS-80 home computer

** Bea Arthur singing a bar song to a tuneful version of one of the original "Star Wars" cantina songs transposed down a few church modes

** Harvey Korman's attempt to turn "Star Wars" into a skit on the "Carol Burnett Show"

** Jefferson Starships first step in its move from the superstar band of the 70s to the category "rock groups that suck"

** Luke Skywalker in his '70s style feathered mullet

** A very stoned Carrie Fischer singing a holiday ballad to a toned down opening "Star Wars" theme

** The very poignant love scene between battle-worn Chewie and his very hairy woman (as creepy as it was, it was more convincing than anything in "Attack of the Clones")

This thing has comedy that never dies. I am glad I finally tracked down a good copy of it.
