Duke3D was actually 2.99 (recurring) D.
Only real reason why there is still side-scrollers: They're pretty easy to make. I've made 3D games, even though its only one extra dimension, it takes a lot longer to implement than the first two. Honestly, not trying to boast here by I've made full 2D games in a single afternoon before.

I get that suspicious feeling that the bit about The Lost Vikings humping Little Big Adventure is going to haunt me in my nightmares...
