Why do so many people like the PT over the OT? Confusion!

When I look at A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, and even Return of the Jedi, I see three of the greatest films of all-time telling one classic story with some of the most memorable and beloved characters in movie history. Scene after scene, moment after moment, everything is memorable. See these films (preferably without PT knowledge) and they will stick with you for a very long time.
When I look at The Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and to a lesser extent Revenge of the Sith I see nothing except CGI, OT inconsistencies, plot holes and contradictions, and wooden acting and poorly-written and delivered dialogue with blank un-memorable or annoying characters.
So why do so many Star Wars fans put these three on the same caliber as the OT?

it basically says: 'here i am, a crap movie that didn't try very hard but there's lots of fuzzy creatures and flying things and explosions so it doesn't matter that none of this makes any real sense. So you continue being stupid because someone with lots of money will spoon feed you the over-refined sugary crap you wanted to live off.'
it's better because it's new, is the attitude.
and updating the OT is an even worse way of sustaining that attitude.

But Barend, this is exactly what people have been saying about SW since 1977. I'm convinced that many of the die hard OT fans have totally lost sight of what the Star Wars actually is.

box office and DVD sales reflect that you are absolutley right.
Star Wars was a great story with characters you cared for because they cared for each other. They didn't grow up together, they were all seperated from their families, things were revealed to the viewer in ways that just blew people away, the struggle of good against evil, and a galaxy of cultures to just stretch your imagination.
but not this bumblingly pathetic and souless attempt to cash in on the popularity of obscur characters for the sake of it. not this CGI "upgrade" to erase history like a bad toupee.
No... the PT is needlessly shallow, obvious, and drenched in horrid sugary CGI glaze of minimal effort.
i can't believe that people just don't get it.
you can't take a story that people love and say here's a backstory that in no way matches anything you were previously told. nevermind thirty bloody years of lovingly pondering over the information we were given.
oh here's darthvader one of the most recognised villans of cinematic history. now see him as an adorable 5 year old saying yipee and making friends with stupid aliens, even greedo, and how he's a slave to a flying jew, and says yipeee, and makes C3P0, and has relatives on tatooine even though he never searched there for his son who had the same name, and maried a queen who turned out to only be a 14year old elected queen, who started off tough shooting lazers and leading a planet uniting its two peoples then willing herself to die, then her daughter ends up being a princess but only really out of coincidnce, and obviously the list goes on...
it's just unnacceptable.
like Highlander 2's 'oh by the way we're aliens' bullshit.
there are two types of people in this world. people who will shine bright and be remembered forever, and those of us who have no real reson to live at all other than keep the world turning from our crappy little jobs, and when we want to be entertained i don't think it's too much to ask that one of these rich assholes who has let fame go to his head drop the ball like that, and ripp us off on the quality and depth front. i'm pretty sure the $3.00 kid in the kitchen at mcdonalds would get fired if he sent to the front three empty buns in a row.
so why should someone get away with it at a job that pays a billion times more?
no one should be imune to accountability. and the problem is that alot of people tend not to complain, because they're so affraid of rocking the boat that they convince themselves that everything is absolutley brilliant!
like that fast show sketch, with the young guy who thinks everything's BRILLIANT...
"Have you seen terminator 2? Its a film about a man that can turn into a puddle. Brilliant!"
i think of that everytime i see a PT fan.

Haven't laughed hard like that for a while now.
Actually, the wholepost is the best summarization of how the PT derailedinto nothingness.
And the more I think about it, the more I think Watoo is a brilliant character, the anti-Jar Jar. His sneer almost seems to be a wink at the audience saying :you people all got suckered". With his little metal beret in Ep. 2, I wish he would have made an appearance in Ep. 3, or maybe the Watoo race could have had a premium area in the Senate when the shale hit the fan.

Ep3 is out on DVD tomorrow, stop raining on my parade!!!
Seriously though, i've been as eloquent as i'm ever going to be ever on this board over the months regarding my feelings on the PT, it seems a waste of everyones time for me to go over them again. Yes, i'm an idiot (if that gives you an easy way to dismiss those reasons) yes yes yes.
Quickly- I watched Sahara last night. What a souless, charmless sack of shit. It made me think that even though the PT sometimes seems rocky compared to the OT, next to most other films in the same bracket they SHINE.

I already stated that I never liked it that much. OT...as I said, wasn't that bad. And while the PT wasn't as bad as we all make it, it wasn't as good as the OT. OT was mediocre, and since PT is worse than it, it's bad. It became all about effects. But I don't blame GL, he must have felt pressured to write more after the OT. Just as I feel when people keep telling me to update my fanfiction. The quality suffers.

tommorow? where are you?
it's been out for a while everywhere else....
the PT is the only thing on these boards we've ever dissagreed upon, so there's no way i think you're an idiot. you HAVE been eloquent and more importanly civil...
i love some films that other people think are crap. prime example EVENT HORIZON.
nerds were horrified by it, horror freaks were nerded out by it, but i loved it and everyone else can go to hell. i'm sorry to everyone that there was no love story, heaps of violence, and cool actors... but i loved it.
what i can't stand is the fact that these films are achieving way to much success for their quality, and part of scheme to destroy what was my favorite thing for the first 20 years of my life.
i resent that i can't have my original beloved movies, and even more i resent that even if i buy bootlegs i'll still be sitting through a film that has another trilogy out there contradicting everything that's good about it.
on top of which, the countless gushers who go: "No idoit! it makez teh sense coz the midchl0rin5 are teh cool... u n00b!"
the stretches that people make to justify aspects that only contradict their earlier arguments, and act like they're superior. These are the same people that have been so spoon fed by the oversimplicity of the PT that they all missed the fact that Palpatine IS basically anikans father.
but they're so used to everything being more or less writen on the screen that when someone points out they missed something they refuse to accept it and make up some other explanation.
my personal bitterness here, is that EVERYTHING wrong with society is exactly like this!!!
people don't just turn a blind eye to attrocities anymore they defend it.
I know for a fact that a few of my friends are quite happy with the prequels, even though there are things in there, that they have complained about in other films...
and i realize that deep down in the back of their mind they're just as angry about it, but choose to ignore, just so they can be happy...
i don't know if you're one of those or if just out pure chance the things that you love about such movies are the few things they actually got right.
for me, out of pure complacency the things i treasure most about films were needlessly overlooked or shredded to pieces in these films.
i definatley won't deny there are inferior popular films.
SAHARA looks like crap. i won't see it.
Godzilla, Hollow Man, Anacondas, Van Helsing, are some prime examples.
who saw Anaconda and said "that movie needs a sequel!"
