your favorite gaming mag-past and present

so, im basically a console gamer, and with that being said..for years my mag of choice has been gamepro. but it seems to me that in recent years, gamepro magazine has been sucking ass.
for starters, the magazine has been shrinking in content considerably. i have a pretty healthy collection of gamepro magazines from the past, heck, i even have two issues that hail from around 1991 and 1992..but most of what i have is from the months prior to the ps2 release..from around 1999 up until around 2004.
i stopped my subscription when i began to notice more ads than content.
i like mags that present an overall unbiased review of key games. i realize that mags that are dedicated to a sole console (nintendo power, psm, and xbox) are usually some of the best sources for information about any given games for that system..but usually the reviews are tailored with added bias to promote sales.
i now find IMHO that one of the best mags out there for consoles tends to be electronic gaming monthly or game informer. i like thick chunky mags that are coffee table worthy,.especially when they run an extra thick issue for december, always great to read for hours on end while laying in bed sipping on egg nog while the snow falls outside.
i also choose mags that have easy to understand reviews, that arent laden with excessive artwork that detracts from the format of the review itself.
game informer does an excellent classic review of games. i dont know what it is, but there was a certain magic that was about in the super nintendo/sega genesis era. some of that magic was also prevalent in the n64/ps one era too.
Shit, Fuck, Piss: I had to say that because I can on this website. (Thanks Chef!)

some of the guys that work at gamestop are flat out nerds that are in desperate need of a friday night date
you should hear the way they talk sometimes:...
"yeah, in that game, in order to advance to the next level you have to ensure your character has leveled up, because if you start taking damage at that point, you have to start that level all over. if you put this character and that character and grab the golden sword behind the castle steps,.it will render you invincible,.but only until all the wizards retreat,.then you have to wait until you advance to the next level, and from there you have to acquire 10 frog potions, and grab the shield and axe,.well,.you can still get thru with your golden sword,..but its tricky..and i wouldnt recommend it..cause if you did that,it would cause half the members of your party to die too soon..so the best thing to do is to lodge at the inn...sure it will cost you some money..but trust me,.ive played this game 100 times, before the sequel to it ever even was released..so i know what im talking about. but dont lodge at the first castle you see, cause that one has a trap door inside., it best to advance your party to the town directly north of the enchanted forest, thats castle is ok, and youll get twice as much mana there then if you stayed inside of the same village, plus it decreases your chances of dying..and did i mention that if you..."

I read Edge, and find them to be utterly fantastic. My only criticism is that they occasionally get a bit misty eyed about older games, and tend to see them through rose tinted glasses.

GameStop is a terrible dick of a company that is doing its very best to control the entire video game sales industry and make sure it turns into the same shit that the movie and music industry have (mainly, anything worthwhile is unnecessarily expensive, and you're fucked if you're looking for anything older than about two years, and don't forget the perpetuation of the marketing hype on everything.) It doesn't help that they're an unchecked Monopoly in some areas due to buying out all of their competition.
Princess: I'm sure those guys would get girls if they were either willing to put up with all of the crap and/or lack of any shared interests besides breathing of a generic, "normal" girl, or if they could find a girl who didn't feel like she'd be putting up with gamerspeak.
Edit: Finding new hobbies and bathing/shaving more often certainly wouldn't hurt, though.

EGM was my standby, but I mostly just liked it for Seanbaby's column at the end of each issue.

i also utterly refuse to buy any game from gamestop that has a generic jacket cover on it. if it doesnt have the manfacturers artwork on the jacket,.or the instruction manual..they might as well chuck that game into the dumpster

My feelings exactly on the packaging and the pricing. I'm not sure if they're outdated tags or if it's the condition of the game that causes pricing discrepencies, but no generic sleeve. If the game wasn't in a case for teh previous owner, or was too beat up, I sure as hell don't want it.
Until recently my ex-EB outlet was awesome. They knew me by name and gave me all sorts of free crap. My roommate and I hit it up constantly. They expected my rommate to be there almost weekly for preorders heh.

I don't know, I still have a fondness for EB. Mostly because there are no less than five within close distance to my house, which means I can almost always find what I'm looking for in one day of shopping.
