"Also... who taught Palpatine the ways of the force.
That guy should have been the sith lord."
You know it would have been really nifty if they had perhaps had two sith lords working against eachother. The master working from without taking up the parts of Maul, Dooku, Jango, Whatever the trade federation guys name was, and Grievous, and Palpatine the apprentice working from within. That would have been thoughtful and you would have actually been able to grasp how they manipulated people back and forth until the final moment of their victory when Palpatine helps Anakin kill the former Sith lord. They could even have worked in a few extra characters, perhaps Anakin's mother, Mace and some senators to be used a pieces in the game. Now that would be interesting.
Instead Palpatine just controls fugging everything and Anakin and Obi Wan end up getting a chore list of people to kill who we have no idea who they are. Then after Anakin and Obi Wan kill everybody who is evil Palpatine comes in and uses some deus ex machinus to win no matter what. That really just completely invalidates the previous movies.

I had kind of thought - before I saw the prequels and when I started thinking of alternate versions, of some seriously ancient Dark Lord of the Sith who was in control, with Palpatine his chafing pawn, and a small group of Dark Knights, and the clonemasters under his control providing him with an army.
the republic and the Jedi fight the Sith-Clone force, thus the Clone Wars, with Palpatine being used to draw off forces from where it was most needed and inform the Sith Lord of how things went. Anakin being a fighter pilot in the republic navy whom Obi-Wan, knowing the urgency of the situation, impresses upon him the importance of learning the ways of the force ("follow old Obi-Wan on some damnfool idealistic crusade") - the big battles of the Clone Wars, the training and battle-testing of Anakin, his injury in battle - Palpatine taking it upon himself to care for young Jedi as he recovers, and sow the seed of the Dark Side's power in his mind - the battles renewed again, Anakin grows in power, kills in anger and is lost to darkness - Obi-Wan and Anakin duel, Anakin injured to the extent that only his transformation to Vader is the only thing that can save him, while Obi-Wan's labours in th battle weaken him beyond again going into battle - thusly he goes to secretly watch over Luke to prepare for him for his future - Yoda goes to Dagobah to duel the Sith Lord, kills him, creating the dark side cave, but is himself stripped of the power to fight as a Jedi in the battle. The Sith are destroyed, but the Jedi are scattered and few in number - Palpatine is able to exert Hitler-like political power in the absence of the Jedi so that he can defeat the clonemasters - he unleashes Vader to destroy the few remaining Jedi, destroys the clonemasters or commands them to surrender to him, and he takes control of the Republic. Emperor palpatine. Trained in the force by an ancient Sith Lord. There - the bones of a good prequel trilogy.

In my rewrites, when Anakin is on Tatooine, he is actually Anakin LARS. When Anakin finds out his heritage (Shmi's family is a family of Jedi who defeated the Sith 500 years ago, and then went into hiding on Tatooine), he adopts the Skywalker name when he leaves, so that's why no one on Tatooine would know the name Skywalker, and wouldn't connect Luke.

I think Lucas would have been better off hiring another props builder to play him...
