When I watched it again on DVD two years later, it made even less sense and seemed like even more of a jumbled mess than I had remembered.
The Phantom Menace was awful, but at least I could find a few redeeming qualities buried in the offal. The pod race, though a calculated crowd-pleaser, was decent and Star-Wars-ish enough. And I thought the Obi-Wan / Qui-Gon vs. Darth Maul showdown was the best choreographed lightsaber battle in any of the SW movies.
But I can't think of anything nice to say about AOTC. Not a single thing.

I didn't like them, but didn't hate them either. After the euphoria of watching a SW movie wore off (about the 3rd time I saw TPM) I got bored of both of them.
Then I found Chefelf's reasons and since then I only started watching AOTC once. I got to the part where they blew Amidala's ship and I had to turn it off it was that bad.
Sometimes I get so bored you can catch me watching "The Thing That Came From the Swamp", so you know I can stand watching a bad movie. But this one hurts me too much... for all the expectations, all the potential, all the, you know..

You're essentially watching a bunch of actors, half in ridiculous costumes, standing on a bare floor with a blue-screen CGI cue behind them, madly flailing about with little colored plastic sticks. Eight or nine takes of that and I doubt anyone could turn in any kind of performance at all. It's that silly.

That must have been one of the most boring movies to make.
"Now Ewan, I want you to sit on this seat in the middle of our bluescreen studio and say the lines and imagine your talking to a four-armed mustachioed short-order cook who is an old friend of yours."
"What?"
"Action!"
"Oh... hello Deks."

[Luke] "I would never join you" [/Luke]
I have a very difficult time watching them. The one night my sister visited and she wasn't even aware they had made new Star Wars movies (I think she DOES live in a cave), so I had rant and rave about these stupid movies. Well, luck would have it that TPM was on moments after I had told her my dislikes for the films. She started watching them and said, "Where's Luke Skywalker?" I had to laugh. Anyway... she didn't think they were all that good... visually interesting, but not that good.
Battle for the Galaxy--read the "other Star Wars"
All I know is I haven't seen the real prequels yet.

SWIU: He told me enough. He told me YOU killed him!
HyperSpace: No, StarWarsIsUs. I am your father.
SWIU: NOOOOO!!!! IT CANT BE! THATS IMPOSSIBLE!
-later-
SWIU: TheForce.net, why didn't you tell me?

I agree that AOTC is a pretty bad movie. The dialogue was worse than I could imagine, the romance was plain creepy, and the story felt half-finished. The whole thing with Padme's assassination attempt was not needed in the story. The only reason that plot device existed was so that Jango Fett could make an appearence. Surely there was another way Obi-Wan could have found out about the clones?
I've watched it quite a lot of times, and every time, I notice more flaws with it. When I first saw it at the cinema, I thought it was pretty cool, but the last time I watched it, the horrible dialogue struck me as being unavoidable. How did I miss it the first time? Sure, Star Wars dialogue has always been a bit clunky in places ("I'm Luke Skywalker, I'm here to rescue you!"), but the sand line should NOT be tolerated.
I also hate the way Lucas introduces new things about the Force into this movie. In the Original Trilogy, the Force was an energy field. End of story. In the Prequel Trilogy, the Force is an energy field created by nanomites called Midichlorians, which are found in a Jedi's blood. Even worse is that, in AOTC, Mace explains that their ability to use the Force is diminished. What? Yoda and Obi-Wan are still using the Force in ROTS and TESB. And I really doubt Lucas has an explanation for this in ROTS. I really do.
