Silent Hill: Homecoming The Impending Massacre

1) It takes some things from the movie adaptation, such as the cultist's garb and pyramid head's appearance. Yahtz has bashed the movie before; therefore he will bash the game.
2) The actual inclusion of ph is basically worthless. He is never fought and is just in there because the developers knew he was a fan fav.
3) The puzzles were ridiculously easy.
4) The plot was predictable to an extent.
5) There were enough shots of josh running away from alex to make any sensible person just leave the kid behind. He obviously didn't wanna be saved.
These things didn't really bother me because I had no expectations for the game and no standard to compare it to. Hardcore fans have bashed the game. Just wondering if any of you guys had any thoughts on this.

EDIT: oh my god i just realised how much i sounded like someone's mother just then. bah
But wait, is the storyline about some dude who lost his son in Silent hill? Chyeah, totally original. Also, for the puzzles, there should be some difficulty setting that makes them harder or easier and stuff. Oh and what are the weapons like?

gameplay wise i think it's a vast improvement, but the story is probably one of the worst in the series which is sad.

You know, I never really played Silent Hill much...guess I should...

To be fair, I never played the last few, but I never really met anybody who did and thought they were anywhere near as good as the first three.
By the way, the door is rusted shut.

I enjoyed it enough to want to play through it a few more times, and when yahtz destroys the game it will not affect how I feel about it. As far as storyline goes, alex (protagonist) comes back from the military after having nightmares about his little brother to check on him. Little does he know the town he left behind has succumbed to the evil of silent hill...
Weapons are alright. Your main melee weapons are a knife, a steel pipe, and an axe (or upgrades of those weapons). Firearms are a pistol, a shotgun, and a rifle with their respective upgrades as well. Combat is well done, although slightly repetitive and unfair at times. As for more difficult puzzles, there is a higher difficulty setting that I haven’t played through yet, but I doubt the puzzles are affected so much as enemy strength and item scarcity.
@saturnine
I wouldn't know if the game didn't feel silent hill-ish b/c I haven’t played any other sh games, so this obviously didn't bother me. I felt like the plot was alright, but mediocre for a series that allegedly prides itself on great stories. It was a tad predictable, no? Also, I thought pyramid head was a manifestation of James' guilt, and thus would not be relevant to any other games. Although as I said this is my first dabble in the series.

i still feel really weird about pyramid head's inclusion. that's james' demon, reusing him just seems lazy and pointless. at least origins came up with their own variation on pyramid head.
some of the plot points bothered me. the whole police station section felt like a cheesy american horror film. but there was a few things i didn't predict. i figured that alex's brother was dead, and i never anticipate multiple plot twists so i wasn't really paying much attention to anything else.
i do respect the game for feeling like a real survival horror game though, it's one of the last, so many games are now being called survival horror that i'm just getting cynical(going on a tangent). i just got dead space and that's too much like resident evil 4. it's a good game it just pisses me off that it's put in that genre. but then again maybe i have my own definition of survival horror.

On another note I'm gonna get dead space pretty quick, along with the new guitar hero and left 4 dead. Do you prefer dead space or shh saturnine?

SPOILERS???
He punishes those who secretly feel the need to be punished, like James. Deep down he felt so guilty about killing his wife that he needed Pyramid Head to torment him during his ordeal to be able to come to terms with and remember what he'd done, and when he'd done that the Pyramid Heads became weak and killed themselves.
Besides, the image of Pyramid head is a reference to the painting in the museum, of the executioners of long ago, in Silent Hill. I think he could just be actually part of the town.
END SPOILERS
Other than that, I haven't played it so I can't comment, but yeah, they start to decline after SH3. Silent Hill Origins is a fairly good attempt, and is kind of scary, but it's just not the same really.

i've never really seen hostel, but i can see what you're talking about. how lame is it that curtis didn't actually harm elle with that circular saw? he spent waaay too long just scaring her that it stopped feeling like she was in immediate danger. it kind of made my rescue of her seem not that important. i mean, at least have her lose a couple fingers or just skim her arm with it or something. i'm not for torture scenes but if you're going to have one you should make them more convincing.
dead space is pretty fun though i actually think the plot is a bit more cliche than silent hill: homecoming, but it's nowhere near as ridiculous as re4, it kind of seems like a crossbreed between re4 and doom 3. dead space is easier for me than shh, but i still prefer silent hill because, despite my grievances, i'm pretty biased towards the series.
as for pyramid head, i read something that his look was manifested from james' knowledge of silent hill folklore or something, so i've kind of gone with that. i'm not sure how genuine that piece of info is though.

Nothing against Yahtzee, I'd just seen too many ZPs.
But, if Yahtzee is reviewing the new Silent Hill game, then this review will be the first ZP I've watched in a while. He promised to "eat his own ass" if it didn't suck, which is a promising way to start any project.

Prior to Homecoming, he was only seen in SH2, which has led a lot of people to believe that he was a specific creation for the character of that particular game, and should not be reused. In most cases with the monsters of Silent Hill, this is true. Most of them do not, and could not, appear to different people. But Pyramid Head, as was revealed in SH3, is not just some monster created to do naughty things with the mannequins and chase James around with a giant butter knife. He's a deity of the cult in Silent Hill, and was not constructed for any one person.
That said, I still firmly believe that Pyramid Head's appearance in both the movie and in Homecoming was a decision made by a bunch of suits who realized that they could double their profits just by giving him two or three minutes of face time.
"i was hella glad that the game take a resident evil direction with the combat."
Nothing about it seeming like a Resident Evil game is a good thing. As far as combat goes, the point of Silent Hill games has always been to avoid fighting where it is possible, mainly because you were always playing a character that didn't have much fighting experience. That was part of the atmosphere that made the series what it was.
"Play the first three and then stop. This is the only way you will be satisfied with the series."
Agreed. Although, I can't say The Room was all that terrible. I used to think it was, before Origins and, inevitably, Homecoming. Now I feel sort of nostalgic for Walter and that emotionless tool, Henry.
Oh. I'm new here... Hi.
