If we're moving onto good covers, Sepultura (the Max Cavalera version) did a damn fine cover of "Smoke on the Water"

I recently saw Shrek 2, decent movie but it had some pretty wretched cover versions of David Bowie's "Changes," Bonnie Tyler's "Holding Out for a Hero," and this one kind of surprised me The Buzzcocks "Ever Fallen in Love With Someone (You Shouldn't Have Fallen in Love With)?" Huh, a Buzzcocks cover in a kid's movie? There's something kind of odd and disturbing about that.

RE: Scissor Sisters
I think their "Comfortably Numb" cover was meant more to poke fun at Pink Floyd than pay tribute. I really like it for the way that it sort of tears it down and makes it sound so playful. Sort of like the Flaming Lips' cover of "Can't Get You Out Of My Head" by Kylie Minogue, only it does the exact opposite and takes the upbeat original and turns it into a down-tempo, sad-sounding ballad.

In an interview recently they basically said that but doesn't stop it make my ears bleed. I love the original, so taking the piss or not its not much fun to listen to imo!

Speaking of Shrek covers, the first Shrek movie included a Rufus Wainwright version of "Hallelujah," by Leonard Cohen -- a song which has been covered by just about everyone, I think.
That being said, I think my favorite version is either Jeff Buckley's or John Cale's, covers both. (Although I recommend assembling a bunch of different versions of the songs and listening to them back to back -- I think it's a song that bears hearing a lot of different versions. Also, Bob Dylan's cover is hysterical.)

You'll be happy to know that they've broken up, and most of them have formed a new band called Alter Bridge, who are supposedly quite good...

Speaking of Nirvana, their live cover of "Man who Sold the World" can not compare to the Thin White Duke.
Alter Bridge sounds just like Creed. Which is to say shitty to dull. Just your basic power chord strumming and pseudo-almost-decent occsional guitar playing.

Nirvana had more than their share of great covers though:
"Molly's Lips" (The Vaselines)
"Oh Me!" "Lake Of Fire" and "Plateau" (Meat Puppets)
"Where Did You Sleep Last Night?" (Leadbelly)
Etc.
And I'm just going to assume that waterloggedmonkey55 is young and irrational, since everything they said was generalizing an awful lot.
Oh, and on the subject of good covers:
Joey Ramone - "1969" (the Stooges) and "What A Wonderful World"
Green Day - "Knowledge" (Operation Ivy) and "My Generation" (the Who)
The Forgotten Rebels - "The Punks Are Alright" (a parody of "The Kids Are Alright" by the Who)

Green Day did a bloody good cover of "Blitzkreig Bop" (Ramones, as if you needed telling) at this years Reading Festival...
