I'm only seeing this ten days later but this one gave me quite a laugh when I finally saw it.

The "In" column:
Darth Vader
Darth Sidious
The "Not In" column:
Darth Maul
Darth Tyrannus
Darth Plagueis (I still feel dumb typing that)
Most of the stuff from supporting material does not follow the "in" pattern either. Darth Bane, Darth Malak, Darth Revan, Darth Sion, Darth Nihilus, etc.
Can we drive a stake through the heart of the whole "Darth=In" thing now, please?
Even though it would deprive us of the possibility of "Darth Victus"?

Darth Sidious - insidious, hideous.
Maul - mauled, mangled, crushed, destroyed.
Tyrannous - fairly obvious there - also lame. Why not go the whole hog and get his apprentices to be Darth Saurus and Darth Rex?
The whole Darth as a title thing is lame. I'm not going to use it.

when you do omit it though, you Make things like KOTOR un-canon. And fans won't like that. Plus, in your rewrites take, even though it will be better than GL's ... you have to remember that fans to a certain degree have PT "dogma" already ingrained in their minds whether they like it or not.
I suggest you skirt around the Darth issue by avoiding it altogether. For example, Vader's master was always "Palpatine" or "The Emperor" never "Darth Sidious." We also hear "Vader" and "Lord Vader" many more times than "Darth Vader." If you always refer to your villians as "Lord" instead of "Darth" you can keep both "Darth-Basher" and "Darth-gusher" camps happy and get a better response to your script.

I remember before I saw EPISODE I, there were two distinct things that I had heard about the film that pissed me off to no end.
1. Anakin was a little boy. This had me asking all the obvious questions, such as "Why? Why? When will he grow up? How long will we see him as a little boy? He won't be a little boy for the entire film, will he? Will he? Please tell me this is a joke."
and
2. Everyone being called Darth something. Darth Vader was a unique name. If you look at the original credits, he was called Lord Darth Vader. The prequels however become tiresome with Darth this, Darth that and Darth Tom, Dick and Harry. It's silly beyond belief.
I'm sorry that Knights of the Old Republic adopted the shitty terminology but they SHOULDN'T HAVE. For me, one of the major reasons why I don't want to play that game, despite the fact that all of you seem to worship it, is that it is tainted by the prequels.
However, Just Another Wretched Fan, your solution to keep both parties happy is a good one.
Personally, I wouldn't worry about making everyone happy. I'd worry about making a good story that is consistent with the original movies and making fans of the original films happy. Hopefully people who picked up on some of the rubbish from the new films, whether directly or through video games, would still be able to enjoy it as well. But if you have to choose between contradicting the original STAR WARS or Knights of the Old Republic, it's a no-brainer.

I do need to add though, that my whole point is irrelevant considering that I haven't heard what the alternatives might sound like and whether or not they themselve are better or worse than Darth Something.
I think that anybody will agree that coming up with a good solid name for a character is one of the hardest things to do. I wonder how many times someone read the script for ESB and said "'Calrissian?' ...sounds like an entree at an Italian restauraunt.?"

JAWF - I'm not going to use Darth explicitly except for Darth Vader, in fact, I'll make minimal use of names for the Sith Knights - The only scenes where someone who might know the name of a Sith character are once exclusively with Sith characters in them, and given their hierarchy - the Dark Lord of the Sith and the Prelates don't need to use any name or formality when addressing the Knights, and the Knights will just use the titles "My Lord" "My Master" - if you want to assume there's a Darth in there that option is open to you.
As for KOTOR - I never played it, so I don't know any of the stuff in it. As for using something other than the original trilogy as canon - sorry...
If its not given in or intuitive from the Star Wars trilogy it doesn't get in.
