The "mystery" of Sifo Dyas is covered in the EU novel, Labyrinth of Evil.
The Jedi prove themselves to be just about the dumbest beings in the universe but even that pack of dimwits would probably have remembered that Palpatine was on the Jedi Council.

I always assumed that Sifo-Dyas was Sidious but Labyrinth of Evil shows that he was another fallen Jedi idiot that was getting played by Sidious. He orders the clone army, Dooku erases the record of the planet and then kills Sifo-Dyas so no one will find out.
Of course this is all EU. It was pretty sloppy that it wasn't mentioned in ROTS.

This is yet another example of a character who does not appear in a Star War film but who is then more fully developed in the EU. However, the Labyrinth of Evil is not considered by Lucas to be canon. And why not? Because the EU not only contradicts itself but it also undermines the films. For example, the novelisation of ROTJ says that Owen Lars and Obi-Wan were half brothers, which is why Obi left Luke with Lars but as we all know in ATOC Anakin is Owen Lars step brother and in a Timothy Zahn novel Leia recalls her mother dying in the arms of a masked Vader.
If Lucas doesn't legitimise the EU he shouldn't expect it to support his films when they fail to come through and readers should save their money and buy cream cakes instead.

Has the Lucasfilm canon policy changed? I always thought that the EU was 'quasi-canon'; it supercedes everything but the movies and official movie novelizations.
I haven't read Labyrinth of Evil; does it somehow contradict the films? If it does than the films obviously come first, as in the case of Obi and Owen being half-brothers.
As to the topic of discussion, I always assumed that Dooku impersonated Sifo-Dyas to order the Clone army, and that Sifo died earlier in some unrelated incident. Regardless, I never really lost any sleep over Sifo-Dyas. Just another stupid little plot point that went unexplained in the movies.

Did they not have accounting, bank accounts, or any record keeping a long time ago, in this place far, far away?
How was it that the Jedi/Republic were paying for this massive clone army, and no one, in 20 years from when it was originally ordered/payed for, thought to inquire what the payments were for?
Are the Jedi accountants Jedi (and hence completely retarded) or was their accounting done by the SW version of Arthur Anderson?

I get the biggest kick out of Obi-Wan being able to waltz by Kamino and take shipment of all of the clones just by wearing Jedi robes and pretending to be Sypho Dias.
This is akin to me wandering by Newport News shipbuilding and saying that I'm there to pick up the new aircraft carrier (CVN-77), then answering "Uh, yeah, that's me!" when they call me "Secretary England". And, as I sail away, one exec saying to another "Well, he *was* wearing a tie."

I guess there ain't a whole lot o' Jedis heading out to that planet. Maybe Sidious told Dooku or whoever was impersonating Sifo Dyas to tell the cloners to expect someone by the description of Obi-wan, or at least the date a Jedi would be expected. In any case, Sidious knew an innocent Jedi would arrive and make use of the Clone Army. Sidious definately seemed to have every contigency thought out and manipulated everything perfectly, so I can believe that. What I initially thought was that Sifo Dyas was Sidious, but from what I've seen on the internet, I doubt that's the case. I still wonder why the names are basically the same, as I find it unnecessarily confusing. You just know the common person is going to assume this line of logic with the phonetic similarities. Lucas seems to know a lot more of the story than he's relating. Maybe he's got some plans to release this information. For a price, of course.

Lucas does not consider the EU to be quasi canon. When all the shit hit the fan not so long ago regarding time lines etc in the EU novels he stated that they are not there to back his films up. That is, the EU is there solely for the fans entertainment and not to be considered canon because they are not part of his Star Wars vision.
My point is that people should not look to the EU for explanations of what is going on in the films if Lucas himself does not consider the EU to do this.

Still high on the exitment of their winnings
