I just recently viewed the thing. It had its moments, but doesn't look all that good compared with the old cartoon. The CGI that worked so well for Beast Wars: Transformers does not work nearly as well for GI Joe, the Real American Hero.
I'd like a qui-gon jinn please with an obi-wan to go.

They did the same with He-Man and I just don't understand it. Why remake it and offend the original version? If you want to make something new, then go and make something new. Or show the original version in its original form. Don't go redoing it into something that bares only a passing resemblance to the original.

Did you know that Beast Wars: Transformers is called Beasties here in Canada? Weird.

Why's it called Beasties?

It's not for us anymore, it's for the ADD kids of the younger generation. They wouldn't put up with the older stuff, so the cheap option is to evolve the style rather than the content. Unfortunately the same also applied to starwars.....
Having said that, I made a personal promise to satan that he can have my soul if he does away with whoever came up with the heavygear CG animation.
So far he hasn't responded.

I tend to get a similar reaction from X-Men fans when I say I prefer Cyclops over Wolverine.

Random incidental: GIJoe was known as action force on this side of the pond.

The point is that instead of launching a missile, one of the guys picks it up and Throws it at the target! That was awesome.

That was the 1987 GI Joe movie, the last hurrah of the 1980s GI Joe craze that began with the MASS Device miniseries.
It revolved around this valley of bug people who wanted to reclaim the Earth after centuries in exile by using spores to turn humans into dumb mutants.
It was supposed to be a theatrical release, but because of the failure of the My Little Pony and Transformer films, it was relegated to direct to video, which sucks when comapred to the Transformer movie, the GI Joe movie is most likely the better of the two (neither was particularly good though).
And then there's the whole Duke-was-supposed-to-die-but-didn't-because-of-upper-management-and-the Optimus Prime-death-backlash, but that's another story.
The big saving grace of GI Joe the movie is the opening you mentioned with the battle at the Statue of Liberty.
