I think the recipe my mother's using it for (cake) specifically names Bicardi. Is that a good or bad thing?

I don't know, I've heard that brand thrown about a lot, but I believe every bottle that has ever shown up at Lights or the Yard does get smash. Soo, I wouldn't know. See, what you need to do is tell your mother to import some Caribbean rum... or, better yet, find an alcohol shop (don't know what others call it, we just say 'de rum shop') and look for the brand: Mount Gay Extra Old, or Cockspur Old Gold. Cockspur is the inferior of the two, but either will suffice.
Remember, if it's your first drink, just take it 1/4 to 3/4, preferably with some Coke. Good drinking.

Hmm, Bacardi. There's worse spirits in the world, but I'd still go with the aforementioned rum/coke mix. Coke goes with everything that's clear and smells of petrol.

She'd probably refuse to go to one of the liquor stores in town*, and since she's only buying one bottle, she'd say it wasn't worth the trip. In fact, I doubt she'd get it at all if she couldn't find it in Wal*mart or some place like that.
*Funny how Louisiana seems to have a reputation for drinking and partying, but the little town I live in seems to have a law against selling any hard liquors.

Well, that just is flat out bad news. I take it you're not of legal age to buy hard liquor then? Heh, our islands like the booze, you can drop into a shop and buy any alcohol from the time you're 16. Maybe even before that, if you look old enough. It's great.

Barbados. It's a little island in the Caribbean. It's slightly boring and expensive down here, but it's a good place overall.
I went there last year on holiday, nice place!

You have to be twenty-one to buy alcohol here. I'm guessing the law changed a few years ago because I remember hearing that the legal age was only eighteen when I was younger.

They simply don't trust you. Or some hard-up old sow decided that alcohol breeds devil-demons and went of nagging the city council or what-have-you. I don't know, I'm sleep deprived.
Oh, and LsTr, it is a good place, ennit? Of course, you must remember Bajan dialect. The fun of it, could you understand a word yourself? Oh, and you must agree with me: the prices here are too damned high on EVERYTHING.

Whoo!
I have now had rum and coke and loved it!
...Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to get any sort of buzz from (as far as I can tell), and my mother won't let me touch the bottle unless she's around (that sounds really, really sad when I say that to someone besides myself...)
But STILL!
I am no longer completely inexperienced! I've found something I like!
