I just saw this documentary called "The Nomi Song" at a local arthouse movie theatre. In the 1980's German-born Klaus Nomi moved to New York City and shocked and amazed the punk/new wave scene with his clever mix of opera singing, 30's cabaret costuming, and space age synth pop. At one point, he was a backup singer for David Bowie during one of Bowie's Saturday Night Live performances.

I came across this flash animation thing this guy did for Klaus' song "Three Wishes." It blew my mind! Klaus definitely has one of the best falsettos in modern music.

Thanks for the link. I remember him from his cover of the "don't tell me what to do" song. He also sang the Mighty Mouse theme, I'm led to believe.

I'm not sure he ever sang the Mighty Mouse theme, but I can definitely imagine it! He definitely did some amazing cover versions. Going along with the cynical love song theme, he also covered Lou Christie's Lightning Strikes, which has sort of a "don't tell me what to do, I'll do whatever I want" kind of theme which I guess was part of his whole outsider image.

Someone I talked to after the movie said he also did an ironic cover of Donna Summers' "I Feel Love" but called it "I Feel Sick." Man, now I've gotta track down some of his recorded material!

I had only heard of him previously through this concert film of new wave/punk music called Urgh, a Music War! which has long been out of print but I was lucky enough to watch a friend's copy recently.
