A couples of months ago I was zapping through the tv-channels and stumbled over a WW2-movie called "The Dambusters". Never even heard or seen that movie, but the scenes and the dialogues striked me so familiar it was just unbelievable. It looks like as if GL copied it 1:1 into his Star Wars universe.
Definitely. I remeber noting this years ago when I caught a rerun of Dambusters on some TV channel. And looking at the youtube clips now I realize why. So many things lifted scene by scene into Star Wars, including:
Pilots reporting in to their leader.
How many guns do you think? Some in the tower.
Leader starting his run.
Cutting back and forth to HQ where the generals fret.
Running towards the flak.
The others cutting across trying to draw fire.
Even relying on instruments to drop the bomb (though not as advanced as targeting computers they serve the same purpose.)
And if one looks att Dambusters - the Second Dam it even includes the line 'We should be able to see it by now'.
I wouldn'r really hesitate long to call the Star Wars trench run Dambusters in Space.
Add the enemy gunners, enemy fighters and the Music from Squadron 663 and you more or less have it.
Practically the only thing missing is 'It just impacted on the surface' and you might almost infer that too to Dambusters.
